When Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II conceived of their musical adaptation based on the Lynn Riggs play, Green Grow the Lilacs, little did they know how their production of Oklahoma! would innovate and revolutionize the genre of musical theatre.
Set in 1906 Indian Territory, Oklahoma! follows a high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and their cowboy counterparts. Curly McLain, a charming cowboy, and Laurey Williams, a feisty farm girl, play out their love story in front of friend and foe alike. Their romantic journey, as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road, contrasts with the comic exploits of brazen Ado Annie and hapless Will Parker in a musical adventure embracing hope, determination, and the promise of settling a new land.
Winner of the 1944 Pulitzer Prize and numerous accolades and awards, this wonderful theatrical journey includes numerous memorable songs such as "Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin'", "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top", "Pore Jud Is Daid", and "Oklahoma!"
Oklahoma! will be preformed in the Dr. Edwin O'Leary Perming Arts Center at Garden City High School, 6500 Middlebelt Road in Garden City from April 27th to April 30th.
