Island City stage present the heart wrenching play Rotterdam by John Brittain. It is New Year’s in Rotterdam in 2017. Alice has finally found the courage to email her parents and tell them she’s lesbian. But before hitting send, her girlfriend Fiona reveals that she has always identified as male, and now wants to start living as one. "No, Alice, I don’t want to become a man, I just want to stop trying to be a woman.” A bittersweet story with deeply relatable characters that are flawed and hilarious. Beautifully acted and artfully directed, Rotterdam is a comedy with powerful questions about love and identity at its core.
Founded in 2012, Island City Stage has gained the reputation of being a multi-award winning professional theater that provides stellar performances for those in the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Wilton Manors/Oakland Park communities. We specialize in developing new work in addition to featuring the works of playwrights who expose audiences to different voices and experiences. These works are brought to life on stage through the talents of professional artists, both union and non-union, whose credits include Broadway, Off Broadway, National Tours, major regional theatres, flim and television.
Island City Stage was created by members of the Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT community who saw a need for a local, professional theater that explored all aspects of the LGBT experience—accurately, creatively, and compassionately. And it was also important that the plays presented spoke to both LGBT individuals and heterosexuals. Plays that fostered interaction, understanding and acceptance of every individual’s unique perspective.
The LGBT community is rich with history, with characters, with stories. And, at Island City Stage, it has found a place where a strong and vibrant voice is being given to those stories—ones of love and loss, of struggle and humor, of fear and courage.
Zoetic Stage and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County are proud to present the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning NEXT TO NORMAL, a deeply moving musical about the effects of mental illness on a suburban family. The musical features an all-local cast and will run in the Arsht Center's intimate Carnival Studio Theater from March 16-April 9, 2023.
Island City Stage will present “Living the Truth - Seeing the Trans Community Through a Different Lens,” which will precede the opening of Rotterdam opening January 19.
