The play opened on Broadway with Richard Gere in the lead role which the New York Times deemed "powerful and provocative." When I saw that magnificent production co-starring David Dukes, I thought that BENT was certainly one of the greatest plays I had ever seen. Prior to Broadway, it premiered in LonDon Starring Ian McKellan.   Audiences have been mesmerized and moved by its scathing depiction of the persecution and encampment of gay men and Jews in Third Reich Germany. This powerful play was subsequently turned into a film with Clive Owen and Mick Jagger in 1997.

The play takes place in 1934 Berlin where Max and  Rudy are lovers leading a frivolous lifestyle. After a night of debauchery, they are faced with a a Gestapo raid which leads Max and Rudy through a nightmare odyssey through Nazi Germany. In the camps, Max bribes a guard for a Jewish Star in lieu of a pink triangle as homosexuals are ranked lower on the human scale than Jews. There he meets a fellow prisoner, Horst, who makes him confront his own humanity.

Rising Action's production is being directed by Larry Buzzeo, who is also playing Max, a role he has played to great acclaim in Tampa at the SunCoast Theatre. Larry most recently appeared in Rising Action's Some Men and New Theatre's Kissing.  The cast also features John McGlothlin as Horst and Michael Perry as Rudy.  They are supported by Richard Weinstock (Guiding Light) and Rising Action "veterans" Larry Brooks, Ted Dvoracek and Jerry Jensen. New to their stage are Terry Cuzzort and Jason Rempalo.
