What would you do if the devil offered you a deal? This summer at The Garage Theatre, unexpected passions flare, alliances are formed, and characters must decide what their souls are worth when a smooth-talking devil arrives offering to fulfill people’s darkest desires. But this devil might have met his match in the person he thinks would be the easiest mark: Elizabeth, the town outcast branded a witch. Mischief is afoot and the fates are at stake when Alexandria McGinness & Eric Hamme co-direct Witch, by Jen Silverman. This smart, subversive play is loosely based on the 1621 English play, The Witch of Edmonton, by William Rowley, Thomas Dekker, and John Ford, which itself was inspired by the real-life story of Elizabeth Sawyer who was executed for witchcraft on April 19, 1621. Silverman breathes new life into the Jacobean play with an inventive modern retelling that explores themes of exclusion, masculinity, queerness, ambition, and desire.
The Garage Theatre is at 251 E 7th St, Long Beach, CA.
