The West Coast Jazz Hour Quintet – a powerhouse of jazz heavyweights led by drummer Kevin van den Elzen and pianist Josh Nelson – bops into Sierra Madre Playhouse, filling the historic venue with the iconic jazz sounds of the 1950s and ‘60s, on Sunday, September 21, 2025, 7:30 pm. Celebrating the spirit of West Coast jazz, the quintet performs timeless works by music icons such as Shorty Rogers, John Williams, Henry Mancini and Gerald Wilson, as well as fresh arrangements and original compositions.
Joining Nelson and van Den Elzen to round out the quintet are Ron Stout, trumpet, Daniel Rotem, tenor saxophone, and Ken Wild, double bass.
Nelson has performed and recorded with some of the most respected names in jazz and beyond, including Natalie Cole, Ivan Lins, Dayna Stephens, Eddie Daniels, Gaby Moreno, Michael Buble, Benny Golson, Sheila Jordan, John Clayton, John Pizzarelli, and Lewis Nash. He has performed around the world and contributed to numerous recordings, films, and television shows.
Originally from the Netherlands, van den Elzen has delivered the beat for the New York Voices, Dianne Reeves, Gerald Clayton, Bob Mintzer, Hubert Laws, Mary Stallings, Paquito d’Rivera, Fay Claassen, and many others. He has also anchored the rhythm section for the Bill Holman Big Band, Clare Fischer Big Band, Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Paradox Jazz Orchestra (NL), Orchestre de Jazz Luxembourg, and the Millennium Jazz Orchestra.
