Casting Announced for L.A. Production of Letts' 'Bug'

By: Mar. 22, 2007

Lost Angels Theatre Company, winner of the 2005 Ovation Award for Best Production for Killer Joe brings Los Angeles the Los Angeles premiere of the Obie award-winning, critically-acclaimed, smash-hit Off-Broadway play, BUG, written by Tracy Letts and directed by Scott Cummins (Killer Joe, Mr. Kolpert).

The cast of BUG will feature from the Off-Broadway production Amy Landecker, Andrew Elvis Miller, Laura Niemi, Andrew Hawkes and Rob Nagle. BUG will begin previews on Friday, April 20 at 8pm and will open on Friday, April 27 at 8pm at the Coast Playhouse, 8325 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood. BUG is scheduled to run for six weeks through Sunday, June 3. There will also be a special Gala Performance benefiting Behavioral Health Services, Inc. on Saturday, May 5th.

Set in a seedy Oklahoma City motel room, BUG centers on the meeting between Agnes, a divorced waitress with a fondness for cocaine and isolation, and Peter, a soft-spoken Gulf War drifter introduced to her by her lesbian friend, R.C. Agnes stays at a hotel in hopes of avoiding her physically abusive ex-husband, Jerry, who was just released from prison. At first, she lets Peter sleep platonically on her floor, but not long after – a sexual encounter turns to love and she promotes him to her bed. Matters become more complicated as Jerry violently returns to the woman he loves, expecting to resume their relationship. On top of that, there's a hidden bug infestation problem that has both Agnes and Peter dealing with scathing welts and sores – and since we are in Tracy Letts territory, extermination is usually the only way to deal with festering problems.

Letts made his debut with Killer Joe, which originally premiered at the Next Theatre in Chicago and ran Off-Broadway in 1998 with Scott Glenn, Amanda Plummer and Fairuza Balk. BUG was originally produced in London and then went to NY to garnish The Lucille Lortel and Obie awards and a NY Times Top 10 of 2004. Man From Nebraska premiered at Steppenwolf, was named a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, named as one of Time's "Best of 2003," and the West Coast Premiere was also produced by South Coast Rep this past year directed by William Friedkin and starred Kathy Baker and Brian Kerwin. His most recent play August County will be premiering at Steppenwolf in the Summer of 2007. Tracy's work has been produced in 20 languages in 26 countries and has won many awards.

A multi-nominated and award winning theatre company, Lost Angels Theatre Company is considered to be one of the most cutting edge theatre companies in Los Angeles. Recent productions include the 2005 hit play by Tracy Letts, Killer Joe (which garnished four LA Ovation awards for "Best Production," "Best Directing," "Best Ensemble,' and "Best Sound") and Ourselves Alone at The Gardner Stages (extended to The Elephant Theatre). BUG marks the third collaboration that Lost Angels has had with Tracy Letts.

The Design Team features: Set Design by Robert G. Smith (Original Set Designer for BUG at Red Orchid in Chicago). Lighting Design by Leigh Allen (Killer Joe). Sound Design by Ovation award-winner Lindsay Jones (Killer Joe).
BUG will preview on Friday, April 20 at 8pm, Saturday, April 21 at 8pm, Sunday, April 22 at 3pm and Thursday, April 26 at 8pm and will open on Friday, April 27 at 8pm at The Coast Playhouse, 8325 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood. BUG is scheduled to run for six weeks through Sunday, June 3. Performances are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00pm; Sundays at 3:00pm. Ticket prices are $34.95 for all performances. Previews are $30.00. Opening Night tickets are $50. There will be a special Gala Performance benefiting BEHAVORIAL HEALTH SERVICES, Inc. on Saturday, May 5 – Tickets are $100 for the special gala.
