The gown created by Simonetta Lein for her Academy Awards invitation emerges as a visual expression of unity, identity, and shared humanity.

Fashion icon and host of The Simonetta Lein Show, Lein continues her tradition of transforming fashion into message, using couture not simply as appearance, but as a platform for meaning.

“I Belong.

One Humanity.

Un Mundo Unido.”

These words define the philosophy behind the gown, a design conceived as more than a red carpet look, but as a reflection of a deeply held belief that in a world where many are searching for their place, we already share something fundamental, our humanity.

“The intention behind this gown was to create something that speaks beyond fashion,” Lein shares. “I wanted it to be a reminder that, no matter where we come from, we are all part of the same human story.”

The piece, titled I Belong, draws from Lein’s personal journey while speaking to a broader global experience. Born in Italy and building her career internationally, she has long navigated the question of identity and belonging, a theme that resonates across cultures and communities worldwide.

“I called this piece I Belong because it reflects both my personal path and a universal question,” she explains. “So many people today are asking where they belong. My message is that we already do. We belong to one humanity.”

Created for her Oscars invitation, the gown was later unveiled as a symbolic statement after international circumstances impacted the timing needed to complete the final draped element of the design. Rather than allowing the moment to pass, Lein chose to present the piece as it was intended, a message.

Through the movement of the drape and the symbolism embedded in the design, the gown expresses unity within diversity, the idea that individuality, culture, and identity can coexist while still belonging to something greater.

“Through the design, I wanted to express unity within diversity,” Lein adds. “That our differences are not something that separates us, but something that enriches the collective human experience.”

The inclusion of both English and Spanish, “One Humanity” and “Un Mundo Unido,” reinforces the message’s global scope, celebrating the interconnectedness of cultures and acknowledging the shared human experience that transcends borders.

“As an Italian, I feel a deep connection to cultures across the world, especially to my Latino cousins,” Lein says. “Including Spanish was a conscious choice, a way to extend this message of unity across communities and to remind us that we are all part of the same family. This was my call for people to come together, beyond language, beyond borders.”

Following her previous GRAMMY Week statement, which focused on independence and authorship, this creation shifts the narrative toward connection, empathy, and unity.

Rather than existing solely as a fashion moment, the gown stands as a storytelling piece, inviting reflection on belonging in a time where the concept feels increasingly complex.

“My hope is that this gown sparks a moment of reflection,” Lein concludes. “Because in the end, beyond everything that divides us, we share something much stronger, our humanity.”

Different stories. Different cultures. One humanity.
