Tokyo International Players (TIP) is proud to announce a world-premiere concert reading of the original musical JOHN HEMSTOCK BLACK by Alexander Page, directed by Karen Pauley. How far would you go to preserve your family's honor? To save a loved one from the cruelest of fates? Based on the true story of a single, desperate murder in the darkest depths of Georgian England, JOHN HEMSTOCK BLACK is the musical exploration of a troubled soul and the motley crew of colorful characters surrounding him. Playwright/composer Alexander Page cites classic dark comedies such as SWEENEY TODD and THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD as his chief influences; our thrilling, chilling concert reading of JOHN HEMSTOCK BLACK is sure to keep audiences right on the edge of their seats! No walk-ins will be admitted. Strict prevention protocols for COVID-19 will be in place, including vaccine and mask requirements for audience members. Note that this show includes graphic references to acts of violence.

Karen Pauley is a Tokyo based singer, actor, vocal coach, and theatre maker.
Karen has been involved in all aspects of theatre making as an active member of the international theatre community in Tokyo. She has directed for Tokyo International Players (TIP), TIP Youth, and Say Nothing Productions. She is currently directing TIP’s October concert reading of a new musical, and she will be directing the next musical for Tokyo Theatre for Children. She has also been a performer, producer, stagehand, costumer, vocal director, and music director.
