This dance piece is inspired by the Javanese alphabet, comprised of 20 letters: ha na ca ra ka / da ta sa wa la / pa dha ja ya nya / ma ga ba tha nga. The dancers try to interpret each letter of the alphabet through body movements, an amalgamation of Javanese traditional dance and modern dance movements. As reflected in the title of the piece, each dancer is an emissary whose task it is to convey the Javanese alphabet through movements of the body. Each dancer will try to communicate the richness of meaning contained in each letter.
Hanacaraka is Boby Ari Setiawan's most recent choreography since Ghost Track, a collaboration between Boby and LeineRoebana, a dance company from The Netherlands. Boby is a dancer and choreographer who graduated from ISI Surakarta. Together with Agus “Mbendol” Margianto, he founded Independent Expression (IE) in 2002. He has received many awards and art grants to produce dance pieces, as well as observing dance performances in the US.
