The Chinese Lady — written by Lloyd Suh and inspired by the true story of the first Chinese woman to step foot in America — offers a unique portrait of the United States as seen through the eyes of 14-year-old Afong Moy. In 1834, Moy arrived in New York Harbor and was immediately put on display for an enthralled public. As she travels across the country for decades as a living exhibit, her poignant and often witty reflections reveal a young nation still grappling with issues of identity, curiosity, and exclusion.
