Alley Theatre to Present A FEW GOOD MEN, 3/1-24

Bringing together an outstanding, large cast with a world-class artistic team, Alley Theatre Artistic Director Gregory Boyd directs Aaron Sorkin's A Few Good Men. This epic production brings this captivating military courtroom drama to life. A Few Good Men runs March 1 through March 24, 2013, on the Hubbard Stage.

Aaron Sorkin is an Academy and Emmy Award-winning screenwriter, producer, and playwright, whose film credits include The Social Network, Moneyball, Charlie Wilson's War, and the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic. Sorkin's HBO hit series, The Newsroom, debuted in 2012 bringing in an average of 7 million viewers per episode. Sorkin produced and wrote the television series Sports Night, winning the Humanitas Prize and the Television Critics Association Award. He spent the next four years writing and producing The West Wing, winning the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series all four years, two Peabody Awards and the Humanitas Prize.

Aaron Sorkin returns to the Alley Theatre after The Farnsworth Invention in 2009 with this captivating courtroom drama. A Few Good Men ran for nearly 500 performances on Broadway in 1989, became an Oscar-nominated film in 1992 and was re-conceived for a 2005 London revival. This taut, tense thriller, originally inspired by true events, erupts when two Marines are accused of the hazing death of a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay. This hard-hitting, suspenseful story puts the Marine code of honor on trial.

"Sorkin's plays live in a way most theatre writing doesn't," Artistic Director Gregory Boyd says. A Few Good Men features scenic design by Takeshi Kata and costume design by Alejo Vietti. Lighting design is by David Lander with sound design by Jill BC DuBoff, Assistant Director Brandon Weinbrenner and Technical Advisor Steve Waldner.

A Few Good Men, by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Gregory Boyd, begins performances Friday, March 1, opens officially Wednesday, March 6, and runs through Sunday, March 24, 2013, on the Hubbard Stage.

Aaron Sorkin won the Academy Award, the Golden Globe and the Critics' Choice Award for his screenplay The Social Network. The film received critical praise appearing in over 350 top 10 critics lists around the country. He recently won the Critics' Choice Award and was nominated for an Academy Award for the adapted screenplay, Moneyball. The film earned four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

Sorkin's HBO hit series, The Newsroom, debuted in 2012 bringing in an average of 7 million viewers per episode. Set behind the scenes at a cable news show, the ensemble cast is headed up by Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer and Sam Waterston. Sorkin is currently writing the second season, which was ordered almost immediately after the series premiere.

Sorkin made his Broadway playwriting debut with the military courtroom drama, A Few Good Men, for which he received the John Gassner Award for Outstanding New American Playwright. His film adaptation of the play was nominated for four Academy Awards and five Golden Globes, including Best Screenplay. He followed this success with the screenplays for Malice and The American President. Sorkin produced and wrote the television series Sports Night, winning the Humanitas Prize and the Television Critics Association Award. He spent the next four years writing and producing The West Wing, winning the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series all four years. For his work on The West Wing, Sorkin received numerous accolades, including two Peabody Awards and the Humanitas Prize.

In 2006, Sorkin wrote and produced the television series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. He also wrote the 2007 film Charlie Wilson's War and returned to Broadway that year with his play, The Farnsworth Invention (Alley 2009).

David Pegram (Lance Cpl. Harold W. Dawson) is honored to be performing on the Alley Theatre stage. Broadway credits include Pvt. David Taylor and Baby Joey in War Horse. Off-Broadway credits include Malcolm in Broke-Ology. He has a BFA in Acting from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. David was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and is a graduate of HSPVA.

ABOUT THE CREATIVE TEAM
Gregory Boyd (Director) is celebrating his 23rd season at the Alley. During his tenure the Alley has risen in national and international prominence, winning the Special Tony Award and experiencing record transferring its productions to major European Festivals (including two in one season at the Venice Biennale), Broadway, and on tour to 40 American cities. Boyd's addition of artistic associates has enhanced the Alley's visibility and reputation worldwide; while his commitment to maintaining a resident company of actors has made the Alley unique among American theatre companies. This season, he will direct Death of a Salesman and The Elephant Man. Boyd has served as Panelist for the National Endowment of the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Massachusetts Council for the Arts. He has taught on the faculties of Carnegie-Mellon, Williams College, the University of Houston, and the University of North Carolina, where he headed the Professional Theatre Training Program. He was educated at the University of California, Berkeley, where he is a Distinguished Alumnus, and at Carnegie-Mellon.

Takeshi Kata (Scenic Design) returns to the Alley having previously designed Red, The Farnsworth Invention, Subject to Fits, The Clean House and Orson's Shadow. New York credits include Outside People (Vineyard), Adding Machine, Orson's Shadow (Barrow Group), Storefront Church, Through a Glass Darkly, Port Authority, Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow (Atlantic Theatre Co.), Doris to Darlene (Playwrights Horizons), and Gone Missing (The Civilians). Steve Waldner (Technical Advisor) entered the Marine Corps in July 1967 and reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego for boot camp training. Upon graduation, he entered the Infantry Training Regiment at Camp Pendleton, where he also went through Basic Infantry Training. From there he went through the Staging Battalion and arrived in Vietnam three weeks before the 1968 Tet Offensive. Assigned to the Headquarters Battery, 3rd Battalion 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, an artillery battalion, Steve was involved in 18 major operations and was awarded the Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Accommodation Medal with a combat "V" for valor and five other medals. After leaving Vietnam as a Sergeant, he reported to Headquarters Marine Corps in Washington, D.C. where he was assigned to Alpha Company. He worked in the G3 Division and was given duties with Readiness Central, along with making daily trips to the Pentagon delivering and retrieving top secret documents. Steve was also assigned as aid-decamp to the Commandant of the Marine Corps for a dinner at the White House in honor of King Faisal from Saudi Arabia. Steve was discharged in 1971 and returned to Houston.
