Masterworks: Firebird & The Phoenix brings together a program centered on birds in music, featuring works by Respighi, Sibelius, and Stravinsky alongside the world premiere of Fang Man's Song of the Flaming Phoenix for sheng and orchestra. Sheng soloist Loo Sze Wang performs on the ancient Chinese instrument, placing it at the heart of a program that exemplifies the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra's position at the crossroads of East, West, and Pacific. Music & Artistic Director Dane Lam conducts the program, which includes Respighi's The Birds, Sibelius's The Swan of Tuonela, and Stravinsky's Suite from The Firebird in its 1919 version.
