'PROPOSITION 8,' a new play by South Florida playwright Dan Clancy, will be presented as a Staged Reading for one night only, at 7:30 PM on Monday, February 11th, 2013, in Lynn University's Wold Performing Arts Center, Boca Raton, FL.

Set in Los Angeles, from February of 2008 to June of 2010, the play tells the story of Will and Ned, in a relationship for 10 years, who decided not to marry during the time same-sex couples were allowed to wed under California law. Now their friends are trying to convince them to be the plaintiffs who will challenge Proposition 8 in court. Although they feel it's important to defeat the proposition, they also wonder how a "legal, state-sanctioned marriage" might impact their own definition of the word commitment. This play challenges The Common understanding of the words "marriage" and "commitment."

Directed by Carbonell Award nominee Stuart Meltzer (producing artistic director of Miami's Zoetic Stage), the cast includes Carbonell nominees Michael McKeever and Matthew Korinko, as well as Clay Cartland, Larry Buzzeo, Brian C. Wilson and Clelia Patrizio.

Clancy's plays have appeared off-Broadway, and in American and European regional houses. THE TIMEKEEPERS has been seen in New York, as well as in fourteen countries, and has been translated into Hebrew, French, and German. Other plays include: VOLUNTEER MAN (OBIE Award, GLAAD nomination for Best Play); TWO SISTERS (Joseph Kesslering Playwrighting Award); THE FIRST TIME (book and lyrics, ASCAP award, with music by Lynn Portas). 108 WAVERLY (book and lyrics, with music by Lynn Portas) played in New York, Chicago and Palm Springs. THE PERFECT DAY (with music and lyrics by Julie Gold) has been optioned for an animated movie. Upcoming productions in 2013 include THE TIMEKEEPERS at Wilton Manors' Island City Stage, to be directed by Michael Leeds. Dan is a member of The Dramatists Guild, Actors' Equity and ASCAP.

Jan McArt is in charge of theatre development at Lynn University, where this reading is the second in a series of Staged Readings that will be presented this winter/spring; part of Jan McArt's New Play Reading Series, to develop new plays by Florida playwrights.
