Converts to Christianity to escape a forced marriage in her native village. CHILFORD A man in his early to mid thirties. A catechist in the Catholic Church, the only African who holds this position in the Mashonaland region; also occasional assistant to the British Commissioner of Native Areas. TAMBA A man in his early to mid twenties. Jekesai’s cousin. CHANCELLOR A man in his early to mid thirties. Another member of the Catholic Church; serves as interpreter for white mine owners.
