BREAKDOWN

SEEKING:

Booze. Books. Cigarettes and Arguments.

GEORGE - he/him/his, mid to late 40’s, any race/ethnicity. George is: Desperate. Tired. George is married to Martha, in a once loving relationship now defined by sarcasm and frequent acrimony. Keeps up the fight but does not have the same taste for it as Martha. A member of the history department at New Carthage University.

MARTHA - she/her/hers, early 50’s, any race/ethnicity. Martha is ambitious and outspoken, often brash. Loves to spar. Possesses an earthy, grounded sensuality. Hates getting older. She’s not ready to give up her internal fantasy as the wife of an important professor. She is married to George (but thought she was marrying a version of her father), though disappointed with his aborted academic career. Martha is the daughter of the president of New Carthage University.

NICK - he/him/his, late 20’s, any race/ethnicity. Athletic, good-looking, Midwestern, and clean-cut. Nick is: Eager. Smart. Ambitious. More complicated than he appears. Nick has just become a new member of the biology faculty at New Carthage University. Nick is married to Honey.

HONEY - she/her/hers, mid to late 20’s, any race/ethnicity. Kind, polite, eager to please. Trying to uphold the societal expectations of women at the time, but perhaps there’s a part of her that questions it. She has a low alcohol tolerance, and a weak stomach. Honey is the “slim-hipped”, accommodating wife of Nick.
