SYNOPSIS

After inheriting a drive-in movie theater and gaining custody of his late husband’s teenage son, Remy forms a tentative bond with Pup through classic monster films. When Remy discovers Pup’s cruel bullying of a gay classmate, their relationship fractures—forcing both characters to confront buried grief, internalized prejudice, and moral compromise. Haunting, funny, and unexpectedly tender, Monsters of the American Cinema explores the monsters we excuse, the harm we inherit, and the courage it takes to confront them. The Los Angeles Times hails the play as “exhilarating.”

NOTE

This play contains homophobic and racial slurs, and references to substance abuse and overdose. Both roles require movement; experience with Viewpoints is a plus.

SEEKING

REMY WASHINGTON

37. Black. Cisgender male. Gay. A widower and activist. Charismatic, grounded, and world-weary, Remy leads his household with humor and warmth, but commands respect when necessary. His working-class roots are evident in his unpolished authenticity. NOTE: This character smokes on stage.

PETER PUP MILLER

18+ to play 16. White. Cisgender male. Straight. The son of Remy’s late husband. Smart and uncertain, Pup is an aspiring filmmaker—still a kid with a camcorder and big ideas. At home, he mirrors his father’s quippy humor and restless energy; around his friends, he becomes someone else entirely.
