Equity actors for roles in Wheelock Family Theatre's 2022-23 Season (see breakdown).
Strong actors/singers are encouraged to submit.
Wheelock Family Theatre pledges to produce and celebrate theater that is representative of, and centers characters as well as actors who share the diverse and intersectional identities as those that exist within our audiences.

BREAKDOWN
Roald Dahl's MATILDA the Musical
Adults
Mr. Wormwood/Escapologist/Dad: The nightmare father and the dream father. Mr. Wormwood is a wheeling and dealing used car salesman (literally!), who values money over all else and persistently misgenders his daughter. The Escapologist is a fantastical character from one of Matilda’s stories, who loves his family even more than he loves taking big risks in the circus.
Mrs. Wormwood/Acrobat/Mum: The nightmare mother and the dream mother. Mrs. Wormwood competes in amateur Salsa and Ballroom Dancing competitions and values “looks over books.” The acrobat is a fantastical character from one of Matilda’s stories, who loves her family even more than she loves taking big risks in the circus.
Miss Honey/Teacher: Patient and kind, Miss Honey fosters a love of learning in her first-grade class. She is determined to overcome her own timidity to help Trunchbull and Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood realize that Matilda is a genius.
Trunchbull/Mother/Midwife: A hammer-throwing Olympic champion turned elementary school principal, the Trunchbull believes that children are maggots and invents all sorts of scary punishments to keep them in line. She’s a bully all grown up.
Mrs. Phelps/Sergei/Mother: Mrs. Phelps is the gentle librarian who first introduces Matilda to the magical world of books and then becomes a rapt audience member to her storytelling. Sergei is the head of the Russian Mafia seeking revenge after the used cars they purchased from Mr. Wormwood break down.
Rudolpho/Dad/Cook: Rudolpho is Mrs. Wormwood’s Salsa and Ballroom Dance Partner.
Youth
Matilda: A precocious little girl whose math and reading skills are far beyond her years. She tells fantastically imaginative stories and seeks to right any wrong that she spies at home or at school.
Michael/Big Kid: A sarcastic child with a limited vocabulary, Michael is Matilda’s older brother, who is glued to the television.
Lavender/Henchman: A gutsy and quirky first grader, Lavender pursues Matilda to be her best friend and daringly hides a newt in the Trunchbull’s water glass. Henchman is a member of the Russian Mafia seeking revenge after the used cars they purchased from Mr. Wormwood break down.
Nigel/Henchman: Nigel is a fearful and enthusiastic first grader, who Matilda saves from the chokey by pretending he has narcolepsy. Henchman is a member of the Russian Mafia seeking revenge after the used cars they purchased from Mr. Wormwood break down.
Amanda Thripp/Big Kid: Amanda suffers the Trunchbull’s famous hammer-throw for wearing pigtails and standing up for herself against the principal. Big Kid is a cynical older student at Crunchem Hall, who scares the younger students.
Bruce Bogtrotter/Henchman: Bruce dares to eat a piece of the Trunchbull’s chocolate cake and pays for it by eating an entire cake before doing time in the chokey. Henchman is a member of the Russian Mafia seeking revenge after the used cars they purchased from Mr. Wormwood break down.
Reginald: Student at Crunchem Hall.
Alice: Student at Crunchem Hall.
Hortensia: Student at Crunchem Hall.
Eric: Student at Crunchem Hall.
Tommy: Student at Crunchem Hall.
MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS
Mrs. Mallard - A Duck, who is all tough-love on the outside but warm and soft on the inside. She is stressed about her impending parenthood but strives to be the perfect mother.
Mr. Mallard - A slightly wacky but very smart, somewhat improvisational and sometimes heroic Duck, who is hysterical and stressed about his impending parenthood. He wants to be the kind of father who makes sure that he gets his ducklings whatever they need.
The Michaels - Officer Michael, Mick - the Street Sweeper, Captain Mike - the tugboat captain.
Track One - Vendor, Beacon Hill Resident #1, Politician #2, Car Puppet/Driver.
Track Two - Old Lady, Beacon Hill Resident #2, Politician #1, Car Puppet/Driver.
Jack - An energetic athletic duckling. Park Child. Louisburg Dog Puppet. Sport Duckling.
Lack - The timid, scared duckling. Girl with carriage. Doctor Duckling.
Pack - An uptight, spoiled duckling. Park Child. Music Duckling. Louisburg Human Kid.
Quack - The simple-minded, sometimes wacky duckling. Kid. Chef Duckling.
Puppeteer One - Kack and Mack - two duckling puppets.
Puppeteer Two - Nack and Ouack – two duckling puppets.
BUD, NOT BUDDY
Bud (not Buddy) - Male, 10. An African American boy from Michigan growing up in the foster system during the Great Depression era. Bud misses his mother and desperately wants to find his father. He is smart, resourceful, and driven by a quest for a better life.
Herman E. Calloway – Male, 40’s+. A famous African American musician known throughout Grand Rapids Michigan; the man Bud believes to be his father but is actually his grandfather. He embodies the concept of tough love as a means to survive.
Youth Ensemble – Any Gender, 10–16, African American. A variety of characters in Bud’s life.
Adult Ensemble – Any Gender, 18+, African American & Caucasian. A variety of characters in Bud’s life.
