BREAKDOWN
THE RIPPLE, THE WAVE THAT CARRIED ME HOME
NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR & PLAYWRIGHT: Actors will play their characters at different ages, the playwright notes “it is more important to capture the energy of the age, rather than “play” the age. No one should “play” a child in this world. Consider how the 8-year-old version of the adult character exists in the space.”
SEEKING:
[HELEN] 30s/40s. Black American woman. Always wanted to be a swimming coach, her dream was thwarted when the pools were closed. Janice’s mother. Compassionate, smart, engaging, quietly determined, reserved. She was born and raised in Beacon, Kansas to a pillar of the community middle-class family. She feels a strong responsibility to her community and becomes the backroom activist while her husband becomes the face of their work, helping with strategy and connections.
[GAYLE] 30s/40s. Black American woman. Helen’s younger sister. The fun one. Loving and direct. While her sister stayed in Beacon, Gayle traveled the world working archeological digs. She and her husband owned and worked on a farm. She and her sister have always been close. Doubles as: Young Chipper Ambitious Black Woman – Black American woman. Chair of the Beacon African American Recognition Committee. She’s class president material. She’s that one who is involved in everything. Probably a Black sorority sister. Deeply kind.
[EDWIN] 30s/40s. Black American man. Helen’s husband and Janice’s father. Enthusiastic – sometimes to the point of single mindedness. Charismatic, determined. Born and raised in Beacon, Kansas to a working-class family. Natural storyteller. Protective of his family and loves them deeply. Spent his life as an activist, giving speeches and organizing events, later in life pursuing the legal route.
