BREAKDOWN

General note: the time is 1840s…ish. Think the bleak moors (of England?) and the Bronte Sisters. However: the characters all have American accents. Play the anachronisms. This play is about the present.

AVAILABLE ROLES

AGATHA (Female 40s – mid 50s, non-Caucasian)
10/7/16 Update: This role has now been CAST.

Elder spinster sister. Spidery. Dangerous. Powerful. Charmingly cold, ruthlessly logical and viciously intelligent. Elegant, impossible to impress, flinty and unforgiving. Has fought desperately hard for her status, will sacrifice any and everything to maintain it. Views vulnerability as a weakness – until her heart starts to thaw.

EMILIE (Female 20s, non-Caucasian)

The governess. A romantic with a sweet face. Effervescent, approachable, warm, accessible. Responsible, good at her job, but deeply in love and quietly desperate for change. At first vulnerable, a bit fragile even; later, finds her inner steeliness, cunning and power. Surprisingly adaptable, not at all what she first appears to be. Role requires singing and playing a lute (or some other stringed instrument).

MOORHEN (Female 20s – 40s, non-Caucasian)

A small chicken. Practical and very present-tense. Vulnerable only because of her size – feisty, strong and fierce. A skeptic who does not trust easily. Does not have a particularly strong long-term memory (think: memory of a gold fish), but she’s smart – NEVER dumb. Requires an actor with impeccable comedic timing.

MASTIFF (Male 20s – 40s, any ethnicity)

A large dog. A philosopher-king. Profoundly lonely and charmingly melancholic. Longs deeply for connection, highly articulate, engages in thought-experiments with passion and verve. Experiences love for the first time – and all of the ensuing butterflies, joys, obsessions, desperations, and desires to grip tight and control. A gentle giant who never seems capable of violence – until he suddenly unnervingly is.

UNAVAILABLE ROLES

MARJORY (30s-40s, F, Caucasian)

The scullery maid. Down-trodden. Strategic. A quietly off-kilter and dangerously enigmatic presence. A bit inscrutable. Has been in the household her entire life, and has a very complex history with the family

HULDEY (late 30s – late 40s, F, any ethnicity)

Younger spinster sister. She has a diary. She wants to be famous. Desperate to be seen and profoundly lonely. Immensely creative, spontaneous, a wildness at heart that’s never quite found its outlet. Dangerously susceptible to suggestion, does not handle disappointment well. Volatile in her heart ache and volcanic in her joy.

Role requires singing and rapping.
