BREAKDOWN

LULING - Character is a teen for most of the play, but is also portrayed in their 20s, and in their 80s. A small, acerbic, woman: superstitious, stubborn, haunted by her past; has a surprising sense of humor. Young Lu Ling, is naive, has led a sheltered life and desperately wants to belong and be loved. Throughout the course of the play, she develops into a young woman of great resilience and bravery.

GAOLING - Character is 30s for most of the play, but is also portrayed as a teen, in their 20s, and in their 80s. LuLing's sister. Unlike her sister, she is not haunted by her past and has assimilated more fully to life in the US. Giving and maternal. An optimist.

PRECIOUS AUNTIE (30s) - The disfigured, anxious, overwraught and mute nursemaid to Young LuLing. Strong-willed and bold, but these qualities have been shadowed by shame and guilt. Lives for LuLing. Communicates in hand gestures only understood by LuLing.

THE BONESETTER'S DAUGHTER (20-30s) - Precious Auntie before trauma has wounded her, full of potential and the confidence that her life will be her own. Charismatic, fearless. A woman ahead of her time.

CHANG THE COFFINMAKER / TEACHER PAN (30s-40s) - Chang is well respected in the community, but a bully and a brute with a charming exterior. Teacher Pan is a scholar, erudite and nurturing with a strong sense of justice.

RUTH (late 30s-40s) - Has a placid and content demeanor but carries a quiet inner turmoil. A peacemaker and a pleaser. Has a complicated relationship with her mother, LuLing, connected to her own sense of ambivalence about her identity and heritage.

HU SEN / KAI JING (20s-30s) - Hu Sen is kind, gentle, caring and sensitive; an idealist. Love interest to The Bonesetter's Daughter. Kai Jing is forward thinking, a practical optimist. He wants to free himself and others from superstition and old ways of thinking; a scientist with the soul of a poet. Love interest to Young LuLing.

MISS GRUTOFF / MOTHER (any age) - Miss Gruthoff is a missionary who runs an orphanage, she is enterprising, nurturing, protective and brave. Mother is a steely matriarch, the biological mother to Gao Ling.
