BREAKDOWN

SHEAR MADNESS: Each SHEAR MADNESS production is set locally, so all characters should have a little Chicago in them, but don’t go heavy on the dialect.

BARBARA DEMARCO is the hairstylist/manicurist at Shear Madness. She also keeps the shop running doing it all- taking appointments to restocking the shelves. She may come on as a little cheap, but even so she’s well put together, tough as nails, sassy, street smart, yet immediately likeable and fun. She’s a good time gal. Think South-Sider who’s been living and working on the North Side. (Age range 30-40).

MIKEY THOMAS is a preppy-looking, eager-beaver who’s a capable and earnest undercover cop. He is bright, quick, affable, somewhat deferential, and very helpful; yet innocent, naive, and impressionable. He is a believable, ambitious young cop. Think City College graduate prior to the academy, hoping one day to go to DePaul’s Law School. (Age range 23-30.)

TONY WHITCOMB is the flamboyant, irrepressible proprietor of the Shear Madness salon. He is interested in everything and everyone. Shear Madness is his salon in the Southport neighborhood, and TONY is the king (or queen) of it all. He is fun, devilish, interesting, passionate and a real character. He must not be jaded in any way. His “shoot from the hip” comedy must endear him to all. He must love creating and executing merriment, and mirth. Think coming of age in Boy’s Town in the late 80’s to early 90’s. (Age range 38-50.)

EDDIE LAWRENCE is a well-dressed, nice-looking confidence man who covers a dangerous interior with a smooth, suave, and occasionally charming exterior. He walks the fine line between possessing definite danger while at the same time being able to execute the quick-thinking comedy of the piece. Think he’d be comfortable hustling as much on Rush Street as he would on the West Side. (Age range 30-55).

NICK ROSSETTI (or NICK JOHNSON or TOM O’BRIEN depending on ethnic background). NICK is a hardworking “gumshoe” detective who is on the scene for another reason and finds himself running the murder investigation. He is a likeable, approachable, forceful cop. He is loaded with personality and appeal and have the confidence to “play dumb”. Think old-school Chicago detective before the latest craze of Chicago cop shows. (Age range: 30-50.)

MRS. SHUBERT is an old-money socialite of impeccable breeding and manner. She must move with natural— not artificial— grace and style. She must speak with natural— not artificial— cultured tones. She can really turn on the charm when needed. Think Gold Coast or Mag Mile. (Age range 55-70.)
