YOUNG WOMAN DEBATER A and B – she/her/hers or they/them; age 13-17; this character is around 15 but will consider older teens who look younger; any ethnicity (young persons of color are strongly encouraged to audition); looking for a student with experience on the forensic circuit and a willingness to share a bit of student’s own life and history onstage; acting experience is not required. The two debaters will split performances.

Seeking understudies the following roles:

HEIDI – she/her/hers. 40s; based on Heidi Schreck; a former debate champion who traveled the country in her teens giving speeches about the Constitution at American legion halls for prize money; sunny disposition; smart, engaging, fierce.

LEGIONNAIRE – he/him/his, 40s-60s, Caucasian; someone who is capable of present

I AM NOT YOUR PERFECT MEXICAN DAUGHTER, based on the novel by Erika L. Sánchez

Adapted by Isaac Gómez

Directed by Juliette Carrillo

First Rehearsal: December 9, 2022

Tech begins: January 6, 2023

First Preview: January 13, 2023

Opening Night: January 18, 2023

Closing: February 5, 2023

Possible Extension: February 12, 2023

JULIA – mid to late teens to early twenties. Fuller figured. Mexican American/Chicana. Morena or morena clara, just like her dad . Chewed up nails. Wants more than anything to be a famous writer. The odd daughter out. Not your perfect Mexican daughter. She/Her/Hers.

OLGA – permanently twenty-two, but never looked or acted like a normal twenty-two year old. Tall, thin, and very light skinned. Almost guera. Could be the spitting image of Amá. In fact, they were practically besties. All she ever did was go to work, sit at home with her parents, and take one class at the local community college. The perfect Mexican daughter. Except... maybe not. Oh. And she's Julia's sister. And she's dead. Also plays ANGIE, JAZMYN, PATTY, PRIMA PALOMA. When Olga doubles as other characters, she's less different people, and more like Olga-versions of them. What Julia sees in the wake of Olga's absence. She/Her/Hers.

AMÁ – forties/fifties probably, but more attractive than most people half her age. Mexican. Also known as Amparo Montenegro Reyes. Tall and thin, very light skinned, almost guera. Almost. Has had a tough life and gives tough love to show for it. She cleans houses of rich white people in Chicago and been doing that for like thirty years, probably. Julia and Olga's mother. Well. I guess just Julia's now. Also plays MAMÁ JACINTA, DR. COOKE, HOMELESS WOMAN. She/Her/Hers.

APÁ – forties/fifties probably, but very handsome with a dark mustache that quivers when he tries to hold back emotions. Mexican. Also known as Rafael Reyes. Definitely rounder. Moreno or darker. Very important. Has lived to see more than most and keeps to himself, so you'd never know it. Everything he does, he does for his family. Works for a candy factory, and has been there since he immigrated to Chicago with Amá back in the 1990's. A softy at heart. Also plays TÍO CHUCHO, JOSE LUIS, JUANGA'S DAD. He/Him/His.

LORENA – mid to late teens. Mexican American/Chicana. The craziest bitch in the entire school. Some might call her a hoe, but she calls herself sexy as fuck and has no shame in her body. Morena or morena clara. Has been through most teens her age and so her tough ass puta persona is a manifestation of that. No one is more loyal than her. Chola energy 100%. Aspires to be a nurse and is Julia's bestest friend in the entire world. Also plays BELEN. She/Her/Hers.

JUANGA – mid to late teens. Mexican American/Chicano. The newest member of the Lorena/Julia group. His real name is Juan Garcia but everyone calls him Juanga. Femme as fuck and couldn't be more proud of it. Moreno claro or guero. He can be kind of a bitch, but he's got it really rough at home so can you blame him? He's also a loyal bitch and sleeping with men is probably his favorite recreational activity. He/Him/His.

CONNER – mid to late teens. White. The dreamiest white boy in all of Evanston. Yes, that's right. Evanston. The richest, whitest, most colonialist suburb of the Chicagoland area. It's okay though cause he reads a lot so he kind of knows what's up. Total book nerd, video game nerd, movie nerd -- just a total nerd. No one could be more enamored by Julia than Conner. He/Him/His.

MR. INGMAN – forties/fifties. White. Julia's high school English teacher. More passionate about teaching than most. He is one of those teachers you can't help but fall in love with while learning from them. But he's not a creep, and never abuses his relationships with his students, no. He just simply has a way of making them feel seen, understood, and like they're actual humans with thoughts, desires, dreams, passions, fears, and so on. He probably does the daily crossword in the mornings before class, and probably enjoys an exhilarating evening bing-watching Game of Thrones with his girlfriend. He/Him/His

IS THIS A ROOM

Conceived and Directed by Tina Satter

First Preview: April 21, 2023

Opening Night: April 26, 2023

Closing: May 7, 2023

The nature of this piece is highly stylized, structured and choreographed. There is a great deal of life inside of these characters but the actors who play these parts must be able to find that within the tight spaces and rhythms of the piece.

Seeking understudies the following roles:

SPECIAL AGENT JUSTIN C GARRICK: He/him. 40s-late 50s. White. Leads with a friendly, compassionate demeanor. He tries to make Reality feel comfortable and in some ways taken care of, until he doesn’t.

UNKNOWN MALE: He/him. 30s-50s. Any ethnicity. Matter of fact. There to do a job.

REALITY LEIGH WINNER: She/her. 20s- 30s. White. Very cool under pressure. Incredibly intelligent with a very dry sense of humor. Grounded, vulnerable. Polite and respectful of law enforcement, has a lot in common with the men who are interrogating and is constantly searching for common ground. She is principled and led by a strong, moral compass. This is the worst day of her life.

SPECIAL AGENT R WALLACE TAYLOR: He/him. Mid 30s- mid 40s. Black. Special Agent Taylor has a cool, dry, alpha presence in the room. There’s an edge to him.
