BREAKDOWN
PACIFIC OVERTURES
East West Players, the longest running professional theater of color in the US.
PACIFIC OVERTURES is presented with an ensemble cast playing multiple roles lead by the Reciter who also plays additional roles. In addition to the listed characters, all will double as other roles including Shogun, Shogun’s Mother, Admirals, Samurais, Councilors, & Observers. All characters must sing, move, and act well, are of any age and gender. Knowledge of and experience with traditional kabuki technique, traditional Japanese music and movement, and culture is a plus. The staging will reflect elements of traditional Kabuki. Actors will exhibit a “classical” style, almost Shakespearean, and larger than life feel about them. Singing should be more legit than contemporary. Movement style will feature lower center of gravity (into the ground). Seeking triple threats in terms of the word Ka (song) - bu (dance) - ki (skill). We will also ask that if offered a role, ALL actors will need to be clean shaven as all will be playing multiple roles. Men will be playing male and female roles and women will be playing female and male roles. Any facial hair and wigs will be attached/taken off quickly via hair/make-up.
SEEKING:
[RECITER] – (any gender) 40s – 50s. Asian/Japanese. Baritone or Mezzo. The play’s narrator who explains and comments on the action of the story. He will also occasionally join along with the play’s characters.

[KAYAMA YEZAEMON] – (he/him) 30s – 40s. Baritone. Asian/Japanese. A minor Samurai chosen by the Shogun to defend his country against the foreigners and later becomes Governor of Uraga. Kayama embraces western ideology and customs, creating tension with his friend, Manjiro. Feels a large sense of honor and duty to his position.
[LORD ABE] – (any gender) 40s. Baritone or Mezzo. Asian/Japanese. First Counselor to the Shogun who eventually becomes Shogun himself. Bends to western ideologies at a grave cost.
[TAMATE] – (she/her) late 20s – mid 30s. Asian/Japanese. Kayama’s wife who fears her husband will not be successful in his mission to keep the Americans and is struck by grief.
