BREAKDOWN

All roles will be understudied.

CHARLES DICKENS – 30s-40s, the biggest celebrity artist of his time. Energetic, impulsive, mercurial. Charming, and generous, but also selfish and demanding. After his last book is a flop, he grudgingly begins working on a Christmas novel.

JOHN FORSTER – 40s-50s, warm and sophisticated solicitor, Dickens’ confidant.

CATHERINE DICKENS – 30s-40s, Dickens’ wife, she is a consummate hostess.

ELEANOR LOVEJOY – 30s-40s, a mysterious theatre seamstress.

EDWARD CHAPMAN / MACREADY / OTHERS – 40s, publisher / local actor.

WILLIAM HALL / CRATCHIT / OTHERS – 40s, publisher.

JOHN DICKENS / THACKERAY / OTHERS – late 50s-early 70s, Dickens’ verbose father / novelist, Dickens’ competition.

TOPPING / MR. BUMBLES / OTHERS – 35-45, steadfast groom / jolly toy store owner.

DOREEN / MARIA BEADNELL / OTHERS – 40s, no-nonsense maid / Dickens’ first attachment, she is an ostentatious gossip.

LEAD FAGIN BOY – 20s, mischievous street urchin.

KATEY / OTHERS – early teens, eldest Dickens daughter, she is the leader amongst her siblings.

WALTER / OTHERS – early teens, Dickens son, loves magic.

MAMIE / OTHERS – 8-12, younger Dickens daughter, loves to sing and play piano.

FRANK / TIMOTHY – 7-10, younger Dickens son, has a sweet tooth / mysterious ragged boy often seen sketching Dickens.
