BREAKDOWN

DIRECTOR NOTE:

Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story is a high-energy, fast paced show honoring the story and legacy of the prolific, young singer/songwriter Buddy Holly told through the lens of a radio show, honoring the young star. He was ahead of his time in many ways and his legacy lives on in Rock ‘n’ Roll. He made history performing at the famous Apollo Theatre in 1957. He was determined and passionate and when he knew what he wanted in music or love, he went after it, no matter what barriers existed. Uncompromising in his beliefs and music, his passion drove him to stardom.

This version of the show will be performed without an intermission, and we will build the show around the talents of the performers. Each person should be an excellent musician but most importantly, an excellent collaborator, as we will work to create this ensemble show together and honor the legacy of Buddy Holly.

There will be doubling of certain characters, however, what is listed in the breakdown is a suggestion of how that doubling could work. We are open to building different tracks based off of the talent and instruments of the performers.

MUSIC DIRECTOR NOTE:

While this show is about real musicians that had their own unique style, we don't want you to feel tied to imitating original recordings of material. We encourage you to stay true to general rockabilly vocal stylings in your submission.

A note about casting (adopted from language with consent originally created by Kevin Kantor and Emily Trarquin of Actors Theatre of Louisville):

Most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following character descriptions. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive as possible, and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide.

We are currently not able to transpose audition music at the moment but are open to performers singing the role that they’re most vocally comfortable with. If the song doesn’t showcase you at your best, you can submit another song in the world of the show.

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Please prepare a short cut of an early rock & roll/rockabilly song of your choice, accompanying yourself if possible. If you don't have your own song or don't play a rhythm section instrument, please feel free to sing the provided cut of 'Oh Boy' in your preferred key (which can be found at:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/2ykns9tv4ip44hv/AABuDXsv_t6CIW6RFGk87VpJa?dl=0 ). Additionally, if you play any non-rhythm section instruments (or if your audition song doesn't show full skill level), please include any additional short clips (30 seconds or less) demonstrating proficiency.
