INSTRUCTIONS
We invite all actors to submit one minute of the content of their choosing in the format of their choosing. For this virtual EPA, we welcome all forms of expression – poetry, monologues, scenes, etc. – whatever you feel best represents you and your work. Sugar: Female, 40-49, character is a writer; married mother of two children; by turns confident and flailing, positive and existentially sad, strong, and deeply confused. Truly funny, smart, highly articulate, dexterous, and nimble with language.
Each track will cover a variety of characters, some of which may be of different genders and ages.
Alfredo (Letter Writer #1): Many characters ranging from ages 40-69, who can be practical, aggressive, innocent, slaphappy, numb. All characters are truly funny, smart, highly articulate, dexterous, and nimble with language. They have the ability to transform — via the soul, not via caricature.
Natalie (Letter Writer #2): Many characters ranging from ages 20-39, who can be shy, confident, lost, nerdy, sensitive. All characters are truly funny, smart, highly articulate, dexterous, and nimble with language. They have the ability to transform — via the soul, not via caricature.
Phillip (Letter Writer #3): Many characters ranging from ages 20-39, who can be shy, confident, lost, nerdy, sensitive. All characters are truly funny, smart, highly articulate, dexterous, and nimble with language. They have the ability to transform — via the soul, not via caricature.
LIFE IS A DREAM
An Adaptation of Pedro Calderón De La Barca's Play
By María Irene Fornés
Directed by Stevie Walker-Webb
Dates:
First Rehearsal: April 4, 2023

A note on style: For this production we are actively seeking highly physical actors who are strong with classical text and clown to bring this absurdist Fornés classic to life.
Seeking:
Basilio, King of Poland - a “learned” man, especially in science and mathematics, and he hopes to use his knowledge to overcome fate.
Segismund, his Son - Polish prince imprisoned by his superstitious father, King Basilio of Poland, since the days after his birth, he lives alone, locked in a tower and dressed only in animal pelts for warmth. Segismund is tested by his father to determine if he is capable of ruling Poland.
Astolfo, his nephew- Segismund’s cousin, and Rosaura’s former lover. Astolfo is the Duke of Muscovy, and he comes to Poland to convince his uncle, whom Astolfo believes to be childless, to make him the new king.
Estrella, his Niece - a princess, King Basilio’s niece, and Astolfo’s love interest. Like her cousin Astolfo, Estrella wants to ascend the throne when she believes her uncle to be childless.
Clotaldo, a General in Basilio's Service - is Segismund’s jailer, Basilio’s faithful servant, and Rosaura’s father.
Rosaura, a Muscovite Lady- a noblewoman from Muscovy, Astolfo’s former lover, and Clotaldo’s daughter. Rosaura comes to Poland to find Astolfo and restore her honor by getting revenge on him,
Clarin, Rosaura’s servant - is incredibly talkative, as his name—which is derived from the word clarion, or trumpet—suggests, and he frequently interrupts to tell jokes or offer insightful humor
