PREPARATION

Prepare a monologue of your choice (between 30- 90 secs) and a song selection of your choice (between 30-90 secs). Audition should be no longer than 3 mins.

SYNOPSIS:

The inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria Augusta Trapp, follows an ebullient postulate who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision. Featuring a trove of cherished songs, including “Climb Ev’ry

Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and the title number.

SEEKING:

MARIA RAINER -A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey – young, free spirited, warm, gentle and kind with much determination.

CAPTAIN GEORG VON TRAPP- A retired Austrian naval captain. Polished, yet very military in the way he runs his life to repress his sadness over the death of his wife; underneath, he is warm, understanding, and determined.

MAX DETWEILLER -Charming and vital; a person of sophistication who enjoys the good life; true and loyal friend to the von Trapp family.

ELSA SCHRADER- A baroness of taste and elegance, sophistication

MOTHER ABBESS- Motherly, understanding, strong and authoritative, but kind.

SISTER BERTHE-Mistress of Novices, prudish, strait-laced with a quick tongue, she is less tolerant than other nuns.

SISTER MARGARETTA-Mistress of Postulants, very kind, understanding and concerned. SISTER SOPHIA-Neither demanding nor critical, sticks with the rules.

FRANZ -The von Trapp butler, rather formal but not without spirit, he is proud to be German and loyal to the Fascist cause.

FRAU SCHMIDT -The housekeeper, stoic, does her job efficiently and has a strong command of the house. .

HERR ZELLER -Stern and unsmiling, Nazi official.

ROLF GRUBER -Suitor to Liesl, telegram delivery boy who later becomes a Nazi soldier.

LIESL VON TRAPP (age 16) -The oldest child, blossoming into a young lady. She cares very deeply for her younger siblings.

FRIEDRICH VON TRAPP (age 14) Tough exterior, very much trying to be “the man” of the family. LOUISA VON TRAPP (age 13) Rebellious attitude.

KURT VON TRAPP (age 10, falsetto) Gentle and mischievous.

BRIGITTA VON TRAPP (age 9) Smart and quick witted

MARTA VON TRAPP (age 7) Very sweet and gentle.

GRETL VON TRAPP (age 6) youngest of the siblings

SYNOPSIS:

Based on a true story and set in New York City at the turn of the of the 20th century, Newsies is a rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic leader who rallies newsies from across the city to strike against unfair conditions and dream of a better life! Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,”

SEEKING:

JACK KELLY -The charismatic leader of the Manhattan newsies, fiercely protective of his best friend, Crutchie, and strongly loyal, Jack isn’t afraid to use his voice to attain better conditions for the working kids of New York City. Though living on the streets has given him a tough-guy exterior, Jack has a big heart and can demonstrate a sweet vulnerability.

CRUTCHIE -Though he walks with the assistance of a crutch, Crutchie doesn’t let it define him; when in a jam, Jack Kelly’s best friend relies on a goofy- sweet sense of humor and optimistic resilience. Crutchie is the heart of the resistance.

DAVEY -Les’s strait-laced, bright big brother starts selling newspapers to help his family earn a living but becomes swept up in the fervor of the strike. A leader in his own right who is learning to use his voice to uplift others,

LES -Davey’s cheeky younger brother, is inspired by the freedom of the newsies and loves their independent lifestyle.

SPOT CONLON -The proud leader of the Brooklyn newsies

KATHERINE PLUMBER -An ambitious young reporter, working hard to make a name for herself as a legitimate journalist. Quick, funny, and resourceful, she boldly captures the voice of a new generation rising in her coverage of the newsies’ strike.

DARCY -The upper-class kid of a publisher who sides with the newsies.

BILL -The son of William Randolph Hearst who joins the newsies' cause.

WIESEL -Or “Weasel,” runs the distribution window for the World and knows most of the newsies by name. Assisted by the intimidating Delancey brothers, who keep order by any means necessary, Wiesel is Pulitzer’s

OSCAR and MORRIS DELANCEY -Tough brothers who work at the distribution window for the World, take the side of the publishers in the strike.

JOSEPH PULITZER -A pompous businessman through and through, owns the World and is concerned solely with the bottom line.

MEDDA LARKIN -Inspired by vaudeville performer Aida Overton Walker, this big-voiced saloon singer and star of the Bowery offers her theater as a safe haven for the newsies. An astute entertainer with great comic delivery, she’s a good friend to Jack and stands firmly behind the newsies in their fight for justice.

NEWSIES: including ALBERT, BUTTONS, ELMER, FINCH, HENRY, IKE, JO JO, MIKE, MUSH, RACE, ROMEO, SPECS, SPLASHER, and TOMMY BOY - Some of the hard-working kids of New York City that go on strike for a livable wage. Seitz-Editor, advises Pulitzer, but ultimately admires the kids’ newspaper.

BUNSEN -Pulitzer’s bookkeeper, comes up with the ideas to raise the newsies’ price per paper. HANNAH -Pulitzer’s practical and insightful secretary.

NUNZIO-Pulitzer’s barber

GUARD -The Guard removes the newsies from Pulitzer’s building.

SNYDER -The crooked and sinister warden of The Refuge, a filthy and horrible orphanage, is concerned only with catching enough kids to keep his government checks coming.

MR. JACOBI - Allows the newsies to congregate in his restaurant to plan their strike – when he doesn’t have any paying customers, -that is.

GOVERNOR TEDDY ROOSEVELT -A well-respected lifelong public servant, inspires Jack to stand up to Pulitzer.

RENT

SYNOPSIS:

Rent follows the lives of seven artists struggling to survive while navigating their dreams, loves and conflicts in the East Village of New York City at the end of the millennium. Featuring groundbreaking songs “Seasons of Love,” “Take Me or Leave Me,” and “Out Tonight,”

SEEKING:

ROGER DAVIS -A struggling musician and former drug addict. He is reminiscent of Kurt Cobain. Roommates with Mark in the loft and battles with being HIV-positive.

MARK COHEN -Filmmaker and video artist. Knee deep in his own soul-searching, Mark is the typical young artist. He and Roger are roommates in the loft. A bit of a nerd.

TOM COLLINS -A computer genius and liberal professor. He is a nurturer with a smooth and relaxed disposition. Used to be a roommate in the loft and is HIV positive.

BENJAMIN COFFIN III-The landlord of Mark and Roger's apartment building. A former roommate in the loft, Benny traded in his personal morals for power and wealth.

JOANNE JEFFERSON -A public interest lawyer. She is smart and purposeful in all her decisions. Carries on a tumultuous relationship with Maureen.

ANGEL DUMOTT SCHUNARD -The eccentric HIV-positive street drummer. A drag queen with an incredible gift of dance and a magnetic personality. Becomes Tom's lover.

MIMI MARQUEZ- An HIV-positive stripper with drug addictions She lives in the same building as the loft.

MAUREEN JOHNSON -An unpredictably zany performance artist. Maureen used to live in the loft. She has recently dumped Mark for Joanne.
