Breakdown

ALICE CHAN by B.D. Wong and Robert Lee
Directed by B.D Wong

Just about everyone at Chaffey Hills Elementary School finds ALICE CHAN super annoying, for a hundred hilarious different reasons… but what happens when the unpopular “Queen of the Science Fair” is cast, by her well-meaning teacher, as the lead in the Fifth Grade Play—over the most talented and well-liked girl in the class? Fifth Grade Armageddon, that’s what! ALICE CHAN is a very funny comedy about breaking out of your comfort zone… and being yourself at the very same time.

Roles Available*:

NOTE: Seeking an ensemble of very strong comic actors for all roles. The acting style is highly energized and slightly larger than life, though truthful; the stakes for these characters are very high.

*Please note that Alice Chan will be produced under an Equity TYA Actor/ASM contract. All actors who are cast will be responsible for load in and load out of sets for each performance in this touring production. It is essential that all candidates be able to lift and carry equipment.

ALICE CHAN (Female, 18+): Asian-American. Adult to play fifth grader. Extremely smart and highly efficient but socially awkward in the funniest way possible. She retains everything she learns, pulling random knowledge effortlessly from her encyclopedic brain to everyone’s consternation. She is impervious, in her cluelessness, to the actions of the many who would bully and ostracize her.

NIKKI (Female, 18+): African-, Latin-, Native-, Middle Eastern-, Southeast Asian- or Asian-American. Adult to play fifth grader. The most popular girl in class who is destined to be the star of the play, until she gets cast as the understudy and Alice Chan’s personal acting coach. Not a “mean girl,” she is actually a really nice person doing her best to work with the disappointing situation she’s been given.

MAMA CHAN (Female, 18+): Asian-American. Any age to play 30-40s. Alice’s Mother. She looks out for her daughter’s best interests while still pushing her to venture out of her comfort zone. An unconventional mom, she is not
full of cozy, motherly wisdom and does not shy away from speaking her mind.
NOTE: Actor playing MAMA CHAN also plays CANDACE, one of Nikki’s friends and Alice Chan’s classmates.

MIZ WIGGUM (Female, 18+): Any ethnicity. Any age to play 30-50s. The Fifth Grade Teacher and co-director/writer of the Fifth Grade Play. Somewhat of a progressive educator, she comes up with the idea to cast Alice Chan as the lead, knowing full well it may wreak havoc on the class but suspecting it is a tremendous growth opportunity for everyone.
NOTE: Actor playing MIZ WIGGUM also plays the smaller roles of SHANIYA (student) and MR. NIMBLES (teacher)
