Violinist Regina Carter to Perform at OU in April

Renowned jazz violinist Regina Carter, Oakland University's artist-in-residence, will be in town for two performances in April. Considered the foremost jazz violinist of her generation, she travels the world to perform and is the recipient of a MacArthur "Genius" Award.

Carter, who is an OU alumna, will appear at downtown Detroit's Carr Center on Saturday, April 2 at 8 pm, along with the Oakland Jazz Quartet: Miles Brown, bass; Sean Dobbins, drum set; Scott Gwinnell, piano; and Mark Stone, percussion. The concert will feature "Motown B Sides," including music by Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Junior Walker, The Marvelettes and more.

The Jazz-off Detroit Band will open the concert and DJ Richie Wohlfeil of Lo and Behold Records will be spinning Motown tracks beginning at 7:30 p.m.The Carr Center is at 311 E. Grand River Avenue and there is paid parking within walking distance. View a poster for the event here.

Tickets are $20 general and $10 students. They can be purchased online without service fees at startickets.com or by phone at (800) 585-3737. Advance purchase tickets can be picked up at the Carr Center immediately before the show. Tickets can also be purchased at the Varner Box Office on OU's campus, and pending availability, will be for sale at the Carr Center box office on the day of the show.

Carter and the Oakland Jazz Quartet will also give a Children's Concert on Friday, April 1 at 10 a.m. in OU's Varner Hall,which will be perfect for children of any age. Expect music from movies such as Frozen, Star Wars, The Little Mermaid, Monsters Inc. and more. Audience members are welcome to come dressed in their favorite movie character costume. Tickets are $6 and free for children two and under.

The children's concert is in Varner Recital Hall on the campus of Oakland University. Maps of the campus are available atoakland.edu/map or by searching for "Varner Hall" on a smartphone. Ample free parking will be available.
