Farmers Alley Theatre Announces Lineup for Eleventh Season: AVENUE Q, A DOLL'S HOUSE PART 2, and More

Farmers Alley Theatre returns full-time to our original intimate black-box space in Downtown Kalamazoo for the 2018-19 season. This year also features the return of our Children's Series, as we'll be producing two kids shows - Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and A Year with Frog & Toad in 2019. Our full schedule features a great collection of plays and musicals sure to pique the interest of any theatregoer. The 2018-19 lineup begins in the fall with Beyond the Rainbow: The Judy Garland Musical, followed by the new sequel A Doll's House, Part 2 and a brand-new version of one of our greatest successes, Marvelous Wonderettes: Dream On. We enter 2019 with two engaging plays, the Pulitzer Prize winning drama Doubt, a parable and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (based on the bestselling novel). We finish up our season with two Tony Winning Musicals, the family tragicomedy, Fun Home, and the hysterical puppet musical, Avenue Q.

Executive Director Adam Weiner is thrilled to be back home, "Our time at the Little Theatre on Oakland Drive was very successful, filled with many landmark shows like 1776 or The Producers which we could not perform downtown and I want to think everyone at Western Michigan University who helped make our tenancy there possible. That being said, we're very excited to return home full-time with an incredible lineup of plays and musicals that are going to work perfectly in our beautiful theatre at 221 Farmers Alley. As the subject of our opening show famously stated, 'There's No Place Like Home'."

Farmers Alley Theatre | 2018-19 Season Schedule

We open our 11th season with Beyond the Rainbow: The Judy Garland Musical, an area premiere biographical musical about one of Hollywood's most unforgettable icons. Set both on the stage at Carnegie Hall where she performed "the concert of the century" and Garland's own mind, four different actresses portray Judy from childhood until her tragic final days. September 28-October 14.

Fresh from Broadway comes a sequel to Henrik Ibsen's groundbreaking masterwork of 1879, A Doll's House, Part 2 from author Lucas Hnath (last season's The Christians). Nora Helmer returns to her home and family, after slamming the door on them years ago. Delivering explosive laughs while also posing insightful questions about marriage, gender inequality and human rights, A Doll's House, Part 2 is a sequel that stands perfectly well on its own. November 2-18.

Get ready to groove to the hits of the 60's and 70's this December, as your favorite girl group is back with a brand new show - Marvelous Wonderettes: Dream On. Performed in our famous cabaret setting with desserts & coffee, the Wonderettes are back with great new arrangements as these old friends catch up on the places they've been, the loves they've had, and the dreams yet to come! December 7-30.

February brings the modern classic, Doubt, a parable to the Farmers Alley stage. When a rigidly conservative nun and principal accuses a new priest of improper relations with one of their students, one of the greatest dramas of the 21st century unfolds before your very eyes. Deeply affecting and nuanced, Doubt lets the audience play the jury in this intense and shocking tour-de-force. February 8-24.

Based on the best-selling novel of the same and winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time takes inside the extraordinary brain of 15-year-old Christopher. Exceptional at math, but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life, Christopher gets caught in a fascinating mystery that upturns his entire world. March 15-31.

Fun Home is the 2015 Tony Award Winner for Best Musical, and is the amazing true story of graphic novelist Alison Bechdel and her fraught relationship with her overbearing and secretive father. Deftly dealing with mental health and LGBTQ+ issues, Fun Home is a rich, wholly original look at seeing your parents through grown-up eyes. June 7-23.

We close our season with the Tony Triple Crown Winner (Best Musical, Score & Book), the delightfully naughty Avenue Q. In a world where puppets are real, monsters are good, and life lessons come from the most unlikely of places, this hilariously smart and R-rated musical gem is part felt, part flesh and packed with heart. Warning: Full Puppet Nudity! July 19-August 11.

Season subscription packages are on sale now at the Farmers Alley Theatre Box Office by calling (269) 343-2727 or visiting www.farmersalleytheatre.com.
