About this studio
The Manhattan Ballet & Movement Center operates the Manhattan Ballet School at 149 East 72nd Street on New York's Upper East Side. The original school was founded more than fifty years ago by Elfriede Merman, a former Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo dancer, together with Patricia Savoia; her protege Jennifer Groenke, who trained there from the age of seven and has taught for more than 25 years, now directs the Center and continues that lineage. Teaching follows the Vaganova and Cecchetti traditions, with a faculty of professional dancers focused on technical mastery, poise and self-confidence. Programs run from Baby Ballet and pre-ballet through children's technique classes, modern dance and adult programs, plus Iyengar yoga and a barre fitness class. Performance is central: students appear in productions such as The Nutcracker and a spring concert, some from age four.
