Spectrum Dance Theater is a Seattle organization with three arms: a professional contemporary dance company, a school, and a community engagement program. Based at 800 Lake Washington Boulevard, the company produces contemporary work under artistic director Donald Byrd, whose physically demanding, emotionally charged approach shapes the repertoire, and its dancers are drawn from across the United States and abroad. The School of Spectrum Dance Theater describes its purpose as bridging the gap between ballet and contemporary dance instruction, and takes its motto Dance For All: it holds that an ideal dance body is one that moves well rather than one that matches a visual ideal.
