About this studio
Nrithyanjali School of Dance is a Bharatanatyam classical dance school and company based in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, serving the greater Chicagoland area and Illinois. A 501(c)(3) not-for-profit now in its 20th year, it teaches traditional South Asian performing arts and has grown a culturally diverse and large student enrollment, positioning itself as a community center for education in the art form. Its work is led by artistic director Sushmita Arunkumar, who trained in India under Guru Padmashri Adyar K. Lakshman and has performed widely in India and the United States. The school's program spans classes, workshops and performances, from solo works to group pieces, and its approach integrates storytelling, music, poetry, sculpture, literature and spirituality while keeping to the traditional foundations of the form. It also runs community outreach.
