Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey was formed in 1984 after Alvin Ailey and local leaders agreed to make Kansas City the second home of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. It works as educator, presenter and unifier: it is the sole presenter of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Ailey II in the city, and it reaches more than 25,000 people a year through year-round programs. Its Studio Dance Program, based at 1714 E 18th Street, offers affordable training in ballet, jazz, modern, pointe, tap and creative movement for students from kindergarten through 12th grade, with a boys' class and a combo class as well. Every student receives a full scholarship for a $60 registration fee, which can itself be waived on income grounds.
