Unbroken at Atchley Opera

Unbroken, with music by Jane Kozhevnikova and a libretto by Germaine Shames, is rooted in historical truth and the resilience of memory. Set in 1950, it follows Milada Horáková as she stands trial in a Czechoslovak courtroom during one of the era's infamous show trials, where the outcome was predetermined. Eighteen years later, her daughter receives the letters her mother left behind—words that survived fear, repression, and time itself. The opera reflects on truth under tyranny and the enduring power of testimony, asking what remains when a voice is taken and what happens when it is finally heard again.
