This season, audiences are invited to experience a double bill at Atchley Opera. All of Us and Unbroken offer distinct yet resonant portraits of courage, connection, and the enduring human voice.

ALL OF US

Composer: Hippocrates Cheng
Librettist: K. Maya Kanazawa

Under the quiet hum of fluorescent lights and the flickering glow of a pharmacy sign, All of Us brings three strangers together in a moment that reshapes their lives. When two unlikely defenders step in to protect a teenager, a fleeting act of courage unfolds into something far more profound.

Set against the familiar backdrop of late-night aisles and everyday remedies, the opera captures the fragile, unexpected bonds that form in the aftermath of crisis. In the stillness that follows, these three individuals—drawn together by chance—discover a shared understanding that feels too vital to ignore. All of Us is an intimate meditation on empathy, protection, and the connections we never see coming.

UNBROKEN

Composer: Jane Kozhevnikova
Librettist: Germaine Shames

In stark contrast, Unbroken reaches across decades to tell a story rooted in historical truth and the resilience of memory. In 1950, Milada Horáková stands trial in a Czechoslovak courtroom where the outcome is predetermined—one of the infamous show trials that demanded obedience over justice.

Eighteen years later, her daughter receives the letters her mother left behind—words that survived fear, repression, and time itself. Through these writings, a voice silenced by the state rises again, refusing to be erased.

Unbroken is a haunting reflection on truth under tyranny and the enduring power of testimony. It asks what remains when a voice is taken—and what happens when it is finally heard again.
