Katy Visual and Performing Arts Center has announced their recent designation as a Continuing Education Provider by the State Board of Education and the Texas Education Agency.

Teachers in Katy Independent School District will now have a convenient and entertaining way to maintain their teaching certificates. As of 1999, all Texas teachers are required to complete 150 clock hours of professional development every five years. According to TEA, “only those CPE activities from SBEC-approved registered providers will be recognized for Standard Certificate renewal purposes. All CPE providers approved by SBEC are listed on the SBEC website.”

Katy Visual and Performing Arts Center has consistently expanded its role in education as Katy’s population grows and the demand for art and culture increases. KVPAC’s Executive Artistic Director, Gregory Magyar, saw an opportunity to combine the arts with educational opportunities for teachers. “We are really excited about offering this service to Katy teachers and it’s gratifying to see that Texas educators are really beginning to embrace the arts and its importance in education.”

KVPAC, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, will begin offering professional development this month with their production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night opening January 13. This classic Shakespearean work, directed by Greg Scurria, will run two consecutive weekends at KVPAC located at 2501 South Mason Road, at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center complex.

Teachers who attend the play and want CPE hours will need to fill out a brief survey after the play. Every teacher is responsible for keeping track of their professional development hours and should record the provider's name and ID number, the date and content of the activity, and the number of clock hours that count toward satisfying CPE requirements.

This opportunity will especially be of interest for teachers of English Literature, Drama, Fine Arts and History.

Twelfth Night will be presented January 13, 14, 20 & 21 at 8:00pm and January 15 & 22 at 2:00pm. For more information, visit www.kvpac.org.
