BWW Reviews: YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN Should Delight Beck Audiences, But...
by Roy Berko - Cleveland

(07/14/2014) - On a November Saturday afternoon in 2007, I anxiously entered the Hilton Theatre in New York. I love exaggerated, well-conceived and performed farce. I was going to see 'Young Frankenstein' by the king of farce and parody, Mel Brooks. Yes, 'Young Frankenstein,' officially known as 'The New Mel Brooks Young Frankenstein,' was the Broadway follow-up to 'The Producers,' by the comedy madman and his writing sidekick, Thomas Meehan.

BWW Reviews: Rabbit Run Introduces Audience to Unbridled Comic Hysteria in NOISES OFF
by Roy Berko - Cleveland

(06/20/2014) - The Rabbit Run production of the farce, 'Noises Off,' was well directed, well acted, well technically presented and turned out to be a laugh riot! I saw this show in London was convulsed with laughter. The PP show had much the same effect on me. For anyone wanting a fun summer experience, the trip to Madison, the hospitality and hometown welcome of the RR community, as well as the quality of this production, all say, 'You all come!' You won't regret it.

by Roy Berko - Cleveland

(06/16/2014) - George Bernard Shaw, considered by many to be the premiere English playwright of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, had very set opinions, which he expressed in his writing. A member of the Fabian Society, which was an utopian movement dedicated to establishing a socialist society, he attacked the English education system, organized religion, the blindness of the upper classes in ignoring not the needs of others, but for living lives of deceit and hypocrisy.

by Roy Berko - Cleveland

(06/02/2014) - When a student pays $5000 for a ten-week educational seminar, s/he doesn't expect to be verbally attacked, viciously belittled, diminished, called names, and have a sexual liaison with the instructor. But that's exactly what happens in Pulitzer Prize nominee Theresa Rebeck's provocative comedy, 'Seminar,' now on stage at Beck Center.

BWW Reviews: AMERICAN IDIOT Rocks the Palace, But the Shallow Book Thwarts Over-All Effect
by Roy Berko - Cleveland

(04/28/2014) - In 1968 'Hair,' dubbed the American Tribal Love-Rock musical, exploded on Broadway. It shocked the nation, but gave an accurate picture of a world rocked with chaos. The Vietnam war raged, the peace movement flourished, draft cards were burned, rebellion against traditional values exploded. 'Drugs, sex and rock and roll' became the mantra of the day and were clearly exposed on stage. The show's book was strong and the score was filled with top ten hits including 'Aquarius,' 'Good Morning Starshine,' 'I Believe in Love,' and 'Where Do I Go?' It became the seminal musical theatre offering illustrating 'theater representing the era from which it comes.'

BWW Reviews: The Musical Theater Project Presents DECONSTRUCTING KURT WEILL
by Roy Berko - Cleveland

(04/14/2014) - The wording on the gravestone of Kurt Weill comes from the song 'A Bird of Passage' from his musical, 'Lost in the Stars.' It reads: 'This is the life of men on earth: Out of darkness we come at birth. Into a lamplit room, and then-Go forward into dark again.'

by Roy Berko - Cleveland

(04/08/2014) - What do the phrases, 'all the world's a stage' and 'too much of a good thing' have in common? They are both quotes from Shakespeare's pastoral comedy 'As You Like It.' As is true of that genre, the play, which was written early in 1600, deals with shepherds and the rustic life, but, also concerns love, in its various forms.

(04/04/2014) - On opening night, when Corey Mach made his first appearance on stage in 'Flashdance The Musical,' the audience, after being prepped about his entrance by Gina Vernaci, Senior Vice President of Theater Operations, greeted him with a lengthy ovation. During the curtain call, the audience exploded in vocal and physical adoration when Mach came on stage. Then, when the 2006 Strongsville High School and 2010 Baldwin-Wallace alum put on an Indian's baseball cap, the Palace Theatre literally shook with unbridled excitement. by Roy Berko - Cleveland

(03/23/2014) - One of the most common questions I encountered as a counselor when working with someone who had just experienced the suicide of a family member or acquaintance was 'Why did s/he do it?' Or, in confronting someone who was suicidal, the question is, 'Why do you want to do that?' Ironically, most of the time there is no thoughtful answer.

by Roy Berko - Cleveland

(03/18/2014) - Walt Disney was an animator, cartoonist, producer, director, screenwriter, and the voice of Mickey Mouse. He won 22 Academy Awards. It is ironic that for a man noted for producing some of the most beloved and lovable visual characters, he was emotionally conservative, not often drawing attention to himself.
