Promethean Theatre Ensemble presents Antigone, Jean Anouilh's play written during the Nazi occupation of Paris in 1944, in Lewis Galantiere's adaptation that brings the story into a present-day setting. The production is directed by ensemble member Elaine Carlson and stars Heather Dennis in the title role, with Jared Dennis as Creon, Meghann Tabor as Ismene, and Christina Renee Jones as the Chorus. Rooted in the ancient Greek myth of a woman who defies a king's decree to honor her slain brother, Anouilh reframes the story as a conflict between individual conscience and submission to authoritarian power. Galantiere's version, which premiered on Broadway in 1946, uses accessible American vernacular while making the parallels to World War II and the French Resistance explicit.
