Kanpur: 1857 is a comedic and satirical reckoning with colonial history, in which an Indian rebel, strapped to a cannon, answers to a British officer for the crimes of the 1857 uprising against British colonial forces. Written by and starring Niall Moorjani, and co-directed by and starring Jonathan Oldfield, the play satirises contemporary conflicts around gender, colonial violence, and making art in times of crisis. The production features a live soundtrack from Scottish-Indian tabla player Sodhi. It is an Edinburgh Fringe First winner and recipient of the Asian Arts Award for Outstanding Production.

June 30, 2026 After an Edinburgh Fringe sell-out, Kanpur:1857 came to the Tron in association with Glasgow Mela. Strapped to a cannon, an Indian rebel (Niall Moorjani) finds themselves answering to a British officer (Jonathan Oldfield) for the crimes of Kanpur - an Indian uprising against British colonial forces. Based on historical events, this sharp new play uses comedy to interrogate colonial violence, gender politics, and the challenges of creating art during times of crisis.
