The Trip to Bountiful Comes Alive at PS21[Chatham, NY] The Actors Ensemble brings Horton Footes moving play The Trip to Bountiful to life at PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century with performances June 1 to 9. You can find tickets and more information at PS21chatham.org. This is a beautifully written play that I'm very excited about doing at PS21 in that wonderful Black Box Theater, said the plays director Ted Pugh. Getting to share this play with the community is going to be a joy. We have a sensational cast and material that we love that really moves people. It's such a gift to us be able to do it. The Trip to Bountiful tells the story of Carrie Watts, an elderly woman, who longs to escape the cramped Houston apartment where she lives with her protective son, Ludie, and authoritarian daughter-in-law, Jessie Mae. Carrie wants to return to her beloved hometown of Bountiful, Texas, one final time before she dies. She escapes to the bus station, befriends a young woman named Thelma and heads towards Bountiful, but as they near her hometown Carrie slowly learns that it has inexorably changed. The mythic quality of the story, harking back to Homers Odyssey, is as much about the journey as the revelation that time changes everything including our ideas of home, according to Pugh. Foote, whose career spanned more than fifty years before his death in 2009, has been called the American Anton Chekhov. Pugh said the plays power comes from the characters relationships to one another and Footes poetic writing. First written as a teleplay in 1953 it was later on Broadway before making it to the big screen in 1985. It has seen various revivals since then. We were interested in the subject of home, and whether that is defined by land, people, work, or even a singular structure, said Bethany Caputo, who plays Jessie Mae. Once upon a time, our connection to the land was central to life. Though it was hard, unpredictable, and simple, it gave one a sense of stewardship, of ownership, and perhaps a sense of belonging that is lacking in our society today. Along with Caputo, the production stars Eddie Allen, James Gavin, Jonathan Hyland, Salome Krell, John McManus, Fern Sloan, and Joey Sorge. The Actors Ensemble was founded in 1985 in New York City by a group of professional actors who were inspired by the acting techniques taught by the late Michael Chekhov. The Ensemble began working together with the mission to honor and celebrate the heart of the theatre experience, which is in the hands of the actor. Advance tickets for The Trip to Bountiful for Saturday, June 1 at 7:00 pm; Sunday, June 2 at 2:00 pm; Saturday, June 8 at 7:00 pm; and Sunday, June 9 at 2:00 pm are $20 general / $15 members / $10 students. Tickets at the Door: $25 general / $20 members / $10 students. For more information go to PS21chatham.org.
