Director Jane Schuessler leads the cast of Michael Richard King and Danie Merrill in Ken Kesey's classic.
The CNY Arts Center will present One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the iconic stage adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel, running from April 30th, May 1st, May 2nd at 7:00 PM and May 3rd at 2:00 PM. See photos of the cast in character ahead of the show's performance here!
Set within the confines of a psychiatric ward, the story follows the rebellious R.P. McMurphy (Michael Richard King), whose larger-than-life personality disrupts the rigid routine enforced by the formidable Nurse Ratched (Danie Merrill). As McMurphy challenges authority and inspires his fellow patients, tensions rise, revealing both the humanity and fragility within the institution.
Director Jane Schuessler brings a deeply personal perspective to the production. “This is a story that has always stayed with me,” Schuessler shares. “As someone who has navigated a difficult lifelong relationship with mental health, I felt a strong responsibility to tell it with honesty and compassion. At its core, this play is about dignity, understanding, and how easily people can be defined by systems rather than seen as individuals.”
Balancing humor with isolation and psychological tension, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest stands as a powerful exploration of individuality, authority, and the erosion of self.
