In an exclusive nine-show engagement at The Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, beginning Friday October 8, the marvelous Marilyn Maye premieres "Her Own Kind of Broadway," highlighting the many recordings of Broadway songs she put on the charts for RCA Records. "Her Own Kind of Broadway" performs at the following times: Friday & Saturday October 8 & 9 at 9:30pm; Sunday October 10 at 7pm; and Tuesday through Sunday October 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, all at 7pm.
While under contract with RCA, Maye was the first to record Broadway songs such as "Cabaret," "Step to the Rear," "Sherry," "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" and other Broadway show songs, before the shows opened. Her recordings received a great deal of airplay at WNEW in New York, and stations throughout the country. "Cabaret" became an instant hit for Marilyn as did "Sherry" and when the shows opened, the songs Marilyn had recorded were familiar to audiences. When Marilyn recorded "Step to the Rear" (from "How Now Dow Jones") she was chosen to record that song as the national Lincoln Mercury commercial for more than three years. During her long and varied career Maye has portrayed Mame (in "Mame"), Dolly (in "Hello, Dolly"), Sally (in "Follies"), Carlotta (in "Follies") and Pistache (in "Can Can").Maye will also be in town to receive the Mabel Mercer Award on the opening night of this year's New York Cabaret Convention at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, on Thursday October 7. The most prestigious cabaret award in the country, the Mabel Mercer Award has only been presented to four other artists (Barbara Carroll, Michael Feinstein, Andrea Marcovicci and Steve Ross). This is the convention's 21st season. On October 24, also at Rose Hall, she receives the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation. Among her other recent awards, Maye received the 2010 MAC Award for Celebrity Artist of the Year, for the second year in a row!Photo Credit: Genevieve Rafter-Keddy
