NATALIE JOY JOHNSON AND THE RAGING CASE

Wednesday, January 20 at 7:30PM

$20

Natalie Joy Johnson returns to Joe's Pub to continue the tradition of her fully scripted one-woman extravaganzas - Natalie Joy Johnson is RELENTLESS (Time Out NY's 10 Best Cabarets of 2011) and Natalie Joy Johnson: FULL BUSH (NYMF 2013 Outstanding Individual Performance Award). Johnson teams up with her brilliant, long-time co-conspirators John Hill and Brian Nash to create a brand new show entitled Natalie Joy Johnson & THE RAGING CASE, to ask the age-old question - is Natalie Joy Johnson a suppressive person?

AN AUDIENCE WITH MOLLY POPE

Wednesdays, January 20 at 9:30PM & 27 at 7:00PM

$20

Critically-acclaimed cabarettist Molly Pope returns to Joe's Pub for the live recording of her very first album, An Audience with Molly Pope. Drawing from a catalogue of re-contextualized pop, theater and standards, the "viscerally thrilling alto" (Time Out New York) brings a mix of favorite repertoire and new material. With her signature neo-retro style, she takes the evening back to the heyday of New York City nightclubs. Music Director Tedd Firth will lead a six-piece band. Audience members who participate in the sing-a-long will be credited as back-up artists.

Known as the "Jerry Seinfeld of France," Gad Elmaleh is the voice of Barry B. Benson in the French version Bee Movie. The son of a mime, Elmaleh rose to fame in France with his autobiographical 1997 one-man show, Décalages. In 2000, he cemented his reputation in French comedy with his second one-man show La Vie Normale. His prolific career in French film and television includes notable performances starring opposite Gerard Depardieu in 2004's Ole! and opposite Audrey Tautou in 2006's Priceless. Elmaleh came to the attention of American audiences in 2011, with roles in both Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris and Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin. In 2013, Elmaleh appeared as a guest on Jerry Seinfeld's "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee." In the fall of 2015, he kicked off his American invasion at the Pub, where he will continue through June 2016.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH WITH CATIE LAZARUS

GUESTS: SARAH SILVERMAN, LARRY KRAMER + SHARON VAN ETTEN

Thursday, January 21 at 9:30PM

SOLD OUT

Ever wonder what it's like to have a dreamy job? Comedian Catie Lazarus did too, so she created an utterly addictive, candid, fun talk show about work. See why The New York Times calls the show "beloved" and BlackBook calls it a "hilarious podcast talk show" and The New Yorker calls, "her line of inquiry is decidedly unorthodox." Her guests for the January 2016 installment of the monthly show are comedian Sarah Silverman, playwright and LGBTQ activist Larry Kramer and musical guest Sharon Van Etten.

I BEG YOUR PARTON: ADDIE SINGS DOLLY

Friday, January 22 at 7:30PM

$16

Addie Brownlee is back for her sixth annual Dolly Parton tribute, I Beg Your Parton: Addie Sings Dolly. Just days after Parton's 70th birthday, the show focuses on the hits that the legend has performed throughout her career - getting to the heart of what made her such an icon. "I've sung these songs all my life but now when I sit with them I'm so moved by who Dolly Parton really is," says Brownlee. "The wigs and plastic surgery and 'it takes a lot of money to look this cheap' persona is no doubt a part of her, but I wanted to make her writing and musical judgment, including knowing when to sing a great song that's not her own, the focus."

GREG BANKS

Friday, January 22 at 11:30PM

$15

Greg Banks, described as a "The Saint of Soul," has often been mentioned in the same sentences as Prince, Jimi Hendrix and Lenny Kravitz. The New Orleans native understands the magnitude of this comparison and the importance of carrying such genius in music forward. With his amazing body of musical works and hit singles ''Your Love'', ''16'' and "Brooklyn Girl," available on iTunes now, this phenomenon is causing a major buzz across the industry. Banks may remind you of some, but he certainly duplicates none.

HOLY CROW JAZZ BAND FT. JESSY CAROLINA / SWEET MEGG & THE WAYFARERS

Saturday, January 23 at 9:30PM

$15

Based out of New York City, Holy Crow Jazz Band performs traditional American jazz music from the 1920s-1930s. They transport audience members back through the times of feel-good Prohibition era speakeasies where people were untroubled by consequence, and hardships of the Depression era, when music seemed to be the only cure for sorrow and loss. Seemingly coarse in delivery, lead vocals by Jessy Carolina sound as if they're coming out of an old Victrola on a worn 78 record. She also plays a mean washboard!

Sweet Megg & the Wayfarers will transport you, not to the past but to a new world of their own making. The band is led by charmingly enigmatic Sweet Megg, who imbues each song with her own concoction of melancholy and euphoria that will delight you, surprise you, and break your heart all at once. The group seamlessly incorporates elements of Dixieland, Harlem swing, Parisian cabaret, and gut bucket blues into one charming musical performance. Saxophonist Ryan Weisheit reimagines a world where Sidney Bechet, Lester Young, and Charlie Parker blow side by side.

SAY SONGWRITING PROJECT

Sunday, January 24 at 12:00PM

$12

SAY, the Stuttering Association for the Young, is a not-for-profit dedicated to helping young people who stutter find their voice. At Joe's Pub, they will proudly present the culmination of its Songwriting Project. The young participants, ages 8 - 18, worked with professional songwriters to bring their original songs to life. Everett Bradley, SAY's musical director (Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, The Meredith Vieira Show) leads a professional band to back up these amazing superstar SAY songwriters as they perform their original songs.

PIERROT BY MOHAMMED FAIROUZ AND WAYNE KOESTENBAUM
FEATT. TIMUR BEKBOSUNOV AND THE MIMESIS ENSEMBLE

Sunday, January 24 at 7:30PM

$25

Pierrot is a new operatic work by composer Mohammed Fairouz and writer Wayne Koestenbaum. The show unfolds as if in the demented, war-haunted last episode of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz, or in a German expressionist landscape remastered to resemble an outtake from Disney's Sorcerer's Apprentice. The pale hero Pierrot wanders through circles of a moonlit inferno, where he confronts shadows of charmed, histrionic luminaries, including Susan Sontag, Virginia Woolf, Patty Duke, Mae West, Diana Vreeland. Each of Pierrot's encounters, like an unanswered question, spills back on itself, with the recursive, schizoid elegance of a rondo; Pierrot is traveling backward, not forward.

THE MEETING* HOSTED BY JUSTIN SAYRE

Sunday, January 24 at 9:30PM

$20

The Meeting* hosted by Justin Sayre, the acclaimed comedy/variety show hailed as "rambunctious, uproarious and unpredictable" by The Wall Street Journal, has returned to its downtown roots this year for another season. Each month, Sayre's International Order of Sodomites (I.O.S.) gathers to honor an artist or a cultural work that is iconic to the gay community. Sayre is the show's creator, writer and host, serving as the Chairman of the Board of the I.O.S. The theme for the January show is the legendary Eartha Kitt.

NIGHTCAP | BY IKE

Monday, January 25 at 9:30PM

$12

Remarkable performer Ikechukwu Ufomadu has been described as the son that Woody Allen and Frank Sinatra never had. His show Nightcap | by Ike is an intimate evening of choice comedic fare; a singular mélange of wry humor, special guests and musical interludes. His original, live talk show IKE AT NIGHT has played sold-out runs at JACK and The Public Theater's Under the Radar Festival, and will play again at The Bushwick Starr in May. CASEY BREVES W/ OPENER CELISSE HENDERSON

Tuesday, January 26 at 7:00PM

$15

Born and raised in NYC, singer songwriter Casey Breves divides his time between LA and NYC, where he performs regularly. His duet with YouTube star Sam Tsui, covering Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith, received more than 30 million views to date. He was spotlighted on On Air with Ryan Seacrest, BuzzFeed, and PopSugar. She recently returned from an acclaimed tour Live from the Heartland with Matt Alber. She is also known for her work in the Broadway Revival of GODSPELL at Circle in The Square Theater and her work on The Electric Company. Henderson recently released a live EP entitled Celisse LIVE @ Rockwood Music Hall.

AU PAIR

Friday, January 29 at 7:00PM

$25

A collaboration between Gary Louris (The Jayhawks) and Django Haskins (The Old Ceremony), Au Pair strikes a balance between classic song-writing and cheeky experimentation on their debut album, One-Armed Candy Bear. The core consists of the duo singing and playing into a single microphone like a Memphis Sun session. But then they take some strange turns: body percussion, feedback loops, avant guitar, Kraut rock touches. Anything goes in the world of Au Pair. This openness was encouraged and enhanced by producer and secret weapon Brian Haran, who recorded the album at his studio in Durham, NC.

GATO LOCO: THE ENCHANTED MESSA

Friday, January 29 at 11:30PM

$14

Gato Loco was born from the streets of New York: exotic and foreign, urban and familiar all at once. Like the bombastic fusion of a Latin mambo ballroom and a 21st Century rock show, Gato Loco sweeps audiences off their feet. The group takes its cues from scratchy pre-war Cuban records and vintage Betty Boop cartoons, while freely incorporating an unbridled modern mentality. Finding the surprising connection between early mambo and salsa of the 50s & 60s, early punk of the 70s, and post-modern avant-garde jazz of the 80s, Gato Loco embraces an all-encompassing sound of irreverence, rebellion and abandon that defies place or time. Their latest project, entitled The Enchanted Messa, is a vast arrangement and interpretation of Giuseppe Verdi's 1874 classic Requiem.

The night features Schäffer the Darklord rapping his original song "David Lynch Movie", an audience participation challenge, Chug-a-lug Donna and burlesque performances by many of the characters from Twin Peaks!

Named for Public Theater founder Joe Papp, Joe's Pub at The Public opened in 1998 and plays a vital role in The Public's mission of supporting young artists while providing established artists with an intimate space to perform and develop new work. Joe's Pub presents the best in live music and performance nightly, continuing its commitment to diversity, production values, community and artistic freedom. The organization also offers unique opportunities like New York Voices, an artist commissioning program that provides musicians the resources and tools needed to develop original theater works. Commissioned artists have included Ethan Lipton, Toshi Reagon, Bridget Everett, Allen Toussaint and more. In 2011, the Pub received a top-to-bottom renovation, leading to improved sightlines, expanded seating capacity and a new menu from acclaimed Chef Andrew Carmellini. With its intimate atmosphere and superior acoustics, Joe's Pub presents talent from all over the world as part of The Public's programming downtown at its Astor Place home, hosting approximately 800 shows and serving over 100,000 audience members annually.

The Public Theater, under the leadership of Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham, is the only theater in New York that produces Shakespeare, the classics, musicals, contemporary and experimental pieces in equal measure. Celebrating his 10th anniversary season at The Public, Eustis has created new community-based initiatives designed to engage audiences like Public Lab, Public Studio, Public Forum, Public Works, and a remount of the Mobile Shakespeare Unit. The Public continues the work of its visionary founder, Joe Papp, by acting as an advocate for the theater as an essential cultural force, and leading and framing dialogue on some of the most important issues of our day. Creating theater for one of the largest and most diverse audience bases in New York City for nearly 60 years, today the Company engages audiences in a variety of venues-including its landmark downtown home at Astor Place, which houses five theaters and Joe's Pub; the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, home to free Shakespeare in the Park; and the Mobile Shakespeare Unit, which tours Shakespearean productions for underserved audiences throughout New York City's five boroughs. The Public's wide range of programming includes free Shakespeare in the Park, the bedrock of the Company's dedication to making theater accessible to all; Public Works, an expanding initiative that is designed to cultivate new connections and new models of engagement with artists, audiences and the community each year; and audience and artist development initiatives that range from Emerging Writers Group and to the Public Forum series. The Public is located on property owned by the City of New York and receives annual support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; and in October 2012 the landmark building downtown at Astor Place was revitalized to physically manifest the Company's core mission of sparking new dialogues and increasing accessibility for artists and audiences, by dramatically opening up the building to the street and community, and transforming the lobby into a public piazza for artists, students, and audiences. The Public is currently represented on Broadway by the Tony Award-winning Fun Home and Lin-Manuel Miranda's acclaimed American musical Hamilton. The Public has received 47 Tony Awards, 167 Obie Awards, 52 Drama Desk Awards, 48 Lortel Awards, 31 Outer Critics Circle Awards, 13 New York Drama Critics Awards, and four Pulitzer Prizes.
