Deadline reports that Mercedes Ruehl has joined the cast of the upcoming ABC legal drama pilot DOUBT. The actress joins previously announced cast members Steve Coogan and Carl Gugino on the project from Sony TV.

Doubt will follow Vincent (Coogan), a "former cop who's now a cunning but charming low-rent lawyer using his street smarts to work the system for his clients while battling his own demons and wooing his ex-wife Linda (Gugino)."

Ruehl will take on the role of Mrs. Syn Newman, described as "a lawyer who works (and constantly bickers) with his husband (John Pankow) in offices they rent from Vince. Though frequently exasperated by Vincent, she also considers him a son and her frustration with him never dampens her desire to fight alongside him."

Ruehl won the 1984 Obie Award for her performance in The Marriage of Bette and Boo and twenty years later, an Obie for Woman Before a Glass. She also received a 1991 Tony Award as Best Actress (Play) for Neil Simon's Lost in Yonkers. In 2008, Ruehl returned to the Broadway stage in Manhattan Theater Club's production of Richard Greenberg's The American Plan playing the role of Eva Adler.

The actress will guest star in an upcoming episode of TNT's Monday Mornings and will soon be seen in the film Chu And Blossom.
