The Idea of Remaking GREMLINS is Picking up Momentum

By: Apr. 06, 2014

Over a year ago it was reported that Warner Bros. Pictures was in talks with Amblin Entertainment over a possible remake of the1984 horror comedy GREMLINS. The source added that "negotiations of this sort have happened several times over the years, but making [Executive Producer Steven] Spielberg's deal always proved too daunting a financial prospect."

According to ComingSoon, Warner Bros. has now put the film "on the fast track." There aren't many details available, but it appears that they are still waiting for Spielberg to sign on. The movie will not be remade without him on the team.

GREMLINS, directed by Joe Dante, told the story of a young man who receives a strange creature called a mogwai as a pet, which then spawns other creatures who transform into small, destructive, evil monsters. This story was continued with a sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, released in 1990. Unlike the lighter sequel, the original Gremlins opts for more black comedy, which is balanced against a Christmas-time setting. Both films were the center of large merchandising campaigns.

Steven Spielberg was the film's executive producer and the screenplay was written by Chris Columbus. The film stars Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates, with Howie Mandel providing the voice of Gizmo, the main mogwai character. Gremlins was a commercial success and received positive reviews from critics.
