Submissions For The 8th Annual CAPE New Writers Fellowship Open For 2019

Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment opened submissions today for its eighth annual CAPE New Writers Fellowship (CNWF), a talent and professional development program that trains emerging writers to succeed in Hollywood. Pipeline programs like this are critical, particularly in light of this year's highly-successful #AsianAugust, including the premieres of CRAZY RICH ASIANS, TO ALL THE BOYS I'VE LOVED BEFORE and SEARCHING, which has galvanized the industry to elevate diverse stories.

"Because diversity starts on the page, writers are the lynchpin in changing the media landscape to reflect the world in which we live," said Michelle K. Sugihara, CAPE Executive Director. "As the entertainment industry scrambles for more inclusive stories, the CAPE New Writers Fellowship is more important than ever to nurture underrepresented voices."

Created and co-chaired by Steve Tao (VP, Current Programming, The CW) and Leo Chu (Screenwriter, BATMAN NINJA and Creator/Showrunner, SUPAH NINJAS and AFRO SAMURAI), the Fellowship includes master classes, workshops and panel discussions led by top industry writers, producers, agents and executives. Fellows also polish their scripts with high-level industry mentors. Past speakers and mentors include Adele Lim (CRAZY RICH ASIANS), James Wong (X-FILES), Albert Kim (SLEEPY HOLLOW, NIKITA), Monica Macer (QUEEN SUGAR), Daniel Chun (GRANDFATHERED), Yahlin Chang (THE HANDMAID'S TALE), Angela Kang (THE WALKING DEAD), Laverne McKinnon (K&L Productions), Janet Yang (JOY LUCK CLUB), and more!

The Fellowship's success is undeniable. Alumni have been staffed on every major broadcast network and streaming platform, as well as premium cable channels such as HBO, Showtime, and STARZ. For example, CAPE alumni have written for THE GOOD DOCTOR, GREY'S ANATOMY, STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, 13 REASONS WHY, BOSCH, CHARMED, BULL, SEAL TEAM, THE EXORCIST, SEVEN SECONDS, HAWAII FIVE-0, MYSTERIES OF LAURA, MINORITY REPORT, BACKSTROM, Jimmy Kimmel: LIVE, THE BLACKLIST, SHADES OF BLUE, MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, THE NEVERS, LIGHT AS A FEATHER, BILLIONS, YOU'RE THE WORST, and many others.

Each class is selected through a rigorous process that includes three rounds of blind script judging and interviews by top entertainment industry professionals. Upon successful completion of the Fellowship, each Fellow will receive a cash stipend, a copy of Final Draft Screenwriting software, a month of hosting and evaluation on The Black List and other prizes. All entries must be submitted electronically at www.capeusa.org/applyCNWF by Monday, January 7, 2019 at 11:59 PM PT.

Fellowship partners for the 2019 CNWF include NBCUniversal, Pearl Studio, Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Amazon Studios, 21st Century Fox, Warner Bros. Entertainment, The Walt Disney Company and Disney ABC Television Group, Los Angeles County Arts Commission and Carnival Corporation, as well as in-kind donations from Final Draft, The Black List and Film Independent.
