NBC News Digital announced today that Tony Dokoupil is joining as Senior Writer for NBCNews.com. Dokoupil begins his new role in September, said Gregory Gittrich, Vice President & Executive Editor of NBC News Digital.

Dokoupil comes to NBC News Digital from Newsweek & The Daily Beast, where he held the role of Senior Writer. He also served as a host and reporter for Daily Beast TV. He will report to Hillary Frey, who joined NBCNews.com as Editorial Director of News in April.

"Tony is a remarkably talented writer, possessing the rare ability to tackle complicated topics and dig at the real truth, all while keeping his stories accessible," said Gittrich. "He will add a valuable voice to the expanding team of writers who are defining the new editorial direction of NBC News Digital."

Dokoupil is the author of some of Newsweek's most talked about cover stories, garnering mentions on "The Daily Show" and "The Tonight Show," as well as guest spots on MSNBC, CNN, NPR , "TODAY Show" and ABC's "20/20." Since Tina Brown took over as editor of Newsweek & The Daily Beast in 2011, he has written seven cover stories, including "The Suicide Epidemic," "iCrazy" and "Dustoff 73," which helped anchor the first annual Hero Summit in Washington, DC. His story "The Last Dive" and the accompanying original video became Newsweek's first animated cover.

Previously, Dokoupil was one of two staff writers in Newsweek's Periscope section, which was nominated for a 2008 National Magazine Award for best stand-alone department. He joined Newsweek part-time in the summer of 2006, working as a researcher on the international edition before moving to the domestic arts section as a full-time reporter. Prior to Newsweek, he co-wrote the "Research Report" column for the Columbia Journalism Review.

He received his B.B.A. summa cum laude from George Washington University, where he graduated first in his class, and a Master's degree in American Studies from Columbia University, where he earned a fellowship towards a PhD in media studies before dropping out to pursue journalism.

He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and children.
