The New York Daily News reports today that Katie Couric may fill the chair of VIEW host Barbara Walters when the legendary newswoman leaves the long-running ABC talk show next spring.

According to the source, Couric's new talk show 'Katie' will most likely be canceled this winter, with ratings recently on the decline. "They realize it will never be a success and ratings are down drastically from last season," they share. "The ABC development team has been working nonstop on new talk show pilots and are looking at high-profile names to replace her, hopefully by January."

"Katie," now in its sophormore season, has recently taken on a more 'gossipy' slant in a network effort to attract more viewers. Reportedly, the former news anchor is not happy with the direction the show has been heading and is "sniffing around" for other opportunities.

Says the source, "Katie may ultimately replace Barbara when she retires."

UPDATE: According to Deadline.com, Barbara Walters has denied the report that Couric will be taking her spot on THE VIEW in 2014. "She is always welcome as a guest on The View and I was recently a guest on her show," Walters told the Daily News, "but there is no truth to the rumor that she will be taking my place on The View."

Recently, however, Walters' credibility has come into question after she denied reports of her own retirement as well as rumors that View co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck would be exiting the show. Only days later, both stories were confirmed to be true.
