Joaquin Phoenix Ends DOCTOR STRANGE Negotiations with Marvel

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joaquin Phoenix has officially ended negotiations with Marvel to star in their upcoming live-action DOCTOR STRANGE film. Scott Derrickson will direct.

News broke in July that the studio was courting Phoenix for the role. Other names in the mix at the time included Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy, and Jared Leto. THR has confirmed that the studio and Derrickson are now immedatiely back the search for a new star.

Doctor Strange "made his first appearance in the Marvel Universe more than fifty years ago in 1963, is a former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme -- the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. The character was first created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the pages of Strange Tales No. 110."

Primarily focused in the horror genre, Derrickson has helmed THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, and his most recent film, DELIVER US FROM EVIL, starring Olivia Munn and Eric Bana.

Phoenix will next be seen on the big screen in Inherent Vice. Aside from Her, he has recently starred in The Immigrant and The Master. Among his other well known films are Gladiator, Signs, The Village, Hotel Rwanda and Walk the Line.
